someone much smarter than me, and much more eloquent once said something to the effect of it being important to have multiple perspectives on issues, not so much as to see what is good and bad, but to know what you believe and know what is stupid.

The only way to truly be informed is to be exposed to both sides of an issue. The more ideas out there the better, and I would really like to hold debates. I remeber we tried to have a debate with the College Republicans around the election last fall and they balked at the idea. I would love to take the political atmosphere on campus to the next level. For the time being though, a new group has recently started up to try to do what you mentioned, that is informing the student body. Americans for Informed Democracy is a non-partisain group that is working with both the College Democrats, College Republicans, and other politically minded groups to try to raise the bar of political discourse on campus. I fully encourage you all to look into this new orgainization.

I think you misunder stood me, abbey. I'm not trying to convert democrats to conservatives, I'm trying to promote healthy competition. The only reason conservatives run under the republican flag is because they're the most popular frontrunners closest to conservatives. Don't judge the group because they throw around the word republican. There are several differences. I can't stand the neo-republicans we have in washington right now.

Once again, this is another example of the education process at work.

I know that I am in no way conservative, I don't think your little club would be good for me.

Amanda- Say whatever you want. I think you should be able to. I got your back.

Thank you daniel O, and with that I'd like to ask a straight forward and serious question, and I'd like as many of you to respond as possible. How many of you would support to formation of a college conservative club, like briefly mentioned before? Some of my party's veiws condradict your own, but isn't that what America is about? We need competition in our lives and our country in order to keep us strong. Our two groups would be in competition, but that's a good thing. Plus, we can work together on general volunteer work to better our school, city, state and nation. What more could be expected? We could hold debates, watch political speeches on television and have discussions. We can educate our student body.

This is only my first step in getting a backing for the group. I hope to recruit some of the members of the republican club, as well as some moderates who haven't made a disision between parties. Let's face it, what has the republican club really done recently? I haven't seen much activity. Seriously, I'd like to be enlightened, someone please tell me.

So what do you say?

I would like to commend the UNO College Democrats for their blog. This political discussion among America´s educated youth is precisely what is essential on college campuses. As a registered independent UNO student from Iowa, I must say that your organization does a great job of presenting a positive image of Mayor Fahey and the other Democratic candidates while simply bringing to light the mishaps of their counterparts. This type of political activity is what is needed in this country; a group of open minded young individuals bringing to a campus positive politics. While finding flaws in your opposition, never stop bringing to light the good in your candidate. Negative campaigns win, but never with dignity, and rarely if up against a well run positive campaign.

Capture the audience with controversy, but real them in with compassion.

I would have to agree, what makes us better are differences.

Kerry was Hollywood, they all are. I once heard a joke that politics is Hollywood for ugly people. I like to think that it is true.

Anyway, good posting guys, it has been interesting to say the least.

I don't excpect one person to change the world on a website, and yes, you do have freedom of speech. However, i wouldn't think that it represents your organization very well to spread slander where it's already overflowing. It's pointless and I simply can't respect it. the UNO dems do great things, but it doesn't help your image when you take personal offense to political under-handedness and handle it the wrong way.

I do apologize if I was harsh on Amanda. Like I said, I'm rather new to the political environment here at UNO, and I thought I'd get my feet wet and start expressing my own opinions, just as Amanda and the rest of you have done.

I myself am not a democrat, but I don't call myself a republican, either. I'm a conservative. I like president's like Reagan. Bush is irresponsible, but on the other hand Kerry was terribly Hollywood. He comes from a line of democrats originated by celebrities. He wasn't a true democrat. Gore was a democrat, and Kennedy. In the future of my college career, I hope to start or be involved in some sort of College Conservative group, much like your College Democrats, and I'd love to the the two organizations work together to educate our fellow students, for better or for worse. I haven't seen the UNO republican group do much of anything since I came here. I commend you all for your strength, but democracy works with several parts. Parties need to bounce ideas off of each other to give the people an educated disision about who to vote for. Am I right?

I apologize if what I said personally offended anyone. My intentions were god in nature. My goal is simply to better myself and the rest of the student body as a whole through balanced information and politics.
