Opening Day, Our National Pastime, and the President’s Ego

bushopeningday.jpg

Last night, another baseball season began with the New York Mets defeating the defending World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals 6-1. But today is when the real action begins, opening day of the 2007 baseball season.

Typically, you will see the President of the United States throw out the first pitch. Bush, above, threw out the first pitch for the return of baseball to Washington, D.C. Last year, he went to Cincinnati - a week later - instead, sending Cheney to Washington (where he was met with a chorus of boos).

This year, Bush will again skip the festivities at the Nationals’ opener. It’s not hard to see why: the President is more unpopular than ever before - and he is directly ignoring the will of the people. In the most Democratic city in the United States, it’s not hard to imagine the reaction that Bush would get if he stepped out on the mound today.

Anyway, enjoy the games today. Baseball season is the best season of all.

seriuosly, baseball starting back up is the best thing to happen to America since last year’s baseball season, which was itself the best thing to happen to America since when the White Sox won the world series the year before.

I will support for UNO Dems president anyone who promises to spend all our money in the treasury on baseball tickets and a bus to get us down to KC or up to MN or Chicago to see some games.

Just a quick update on a few things -
    1) A-Rod hit a home run on opening day. He’s currently on pace to have 162 dingers this year - which would be a MLB record.
    2) Derek Jeter only had one hit - but 2 RBI. On pace for 324 - also a record.
    3) Jason Giambi injected himself 3 times with steroids - before the 5th inning. It apparently helped him start the pace towards 486 RBI. Both records, the latter shattering the old RBI record not-yet-held by Derek Jeter in the 2007 season.

That’s all from the Yankees camp - stay tuned in for more in the coming days.

Yeah, but King Felix put everyone else to shame yesterday.

    8 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 12 K against the A’s.

If you haven’t heard of Felix Hernandez yet, you will. :p

Oh, and A-Rod also dropped a foul-ball out and got booed for it.

Adam Dunn’s on pace for 324 home runs.

Seriously Dave, you didn’t need to start the blog post by including the score of the Cardinals game. thanks for rubbing it in.

I know that a few UNO Dems are planning on going to a couple MLB games this summer…. road trip! and we will not be using the chapters funds, are you crazy john?

Also, one thing that I wont particularly miss is Cody’s undying love for the Yankees. I guess we all have our faults.

Hey, Karlee, in a few months when the Cardinals are in first place and the M’s are floundering at the bottom of the AL West, you can gloat all you want. (Yeah, I have real confidence in my team). The Cards were my sentimental favorite last year.
