- Barack Obama is set to officially announce his candidacy for President tomorrow in Springfield, Illinois. I’ve heard a lot of people talk about his experience, but I don’t care about that. We’ve supported candidates for office at every level who were political outsiders. Those were the most appealing campaigns, because too often, the “experienced” folks make the kind of compromising decisions that disgust the idealists among us. So, while he’s only been in the Senate two years, there’s no one I’d rather see as President than Barack Obama. Part of it is the fact that he is the only credible candidate that has opposed the war from the very beginning. Part of it is his message - the politics of hope over the politics of fear. And part of it is the type of campaign he promises to run. I’m genuinely excited about the idea of Barack Obama as President. And I know I’m not the only one.
- Of course, we have no real voice in the process, yet. Nebraska’s primary is scheduled for May 2008, when the nominees of both parties will likely be decided already. Steve Lathrop introduced a bill, LB 460, to establish a Presidential caucus in February ‘08. A hearing on that bill is scheduled for February 22nd. The state party is considering the move. At Saturday’s State Central Committee meeting, the Nebraska Democratic Party agreed to hold a caucus on February 9, 2008. A little bit more on this later. Just thought I’d pass along the info. But start thinking about who you are going to support, because you have a voice!
- I’m sure you all have seen the new Omaha.com by now. It’s hard to imagine how they could have made the new site worse than the old site (virtually unchanged since late 2000 - save for the removal of features like comments - and the addition of registration), but they did. While they got rid of the ridiculous registration requirement (at least, I think they did), they also removed half of the content from the site. There is no national newswire (save for the “elections” page), (Update: the national newswire has returned), the opinion pages, columnists, and public pulse have been entirely removed from online. The World-Herald has managed to, in the year 2007, entirely diminish their online presence to virtually nothing. Compare it to the Lincoln Journal-Star’s website.
- That seems as good a place as any to ask for any suggestions, comments, or tips on this website. We’ve brought a lot more content to the table over the last month and a half, and we’ll continue to do so. What else should we do?
