I haven’t been posting as much lately - lack of news as much as anything. We’ll be back in full force when the semester starts, I can promise you that much. There’s a few exciting developments coming in the next couple of months, and we’ve got the beginning of a new school year and a campaign season just around the corner.

In the meantime, we’ll keep you occupied with some Daily Show/Colbert Report clips:

This one won’t embed, but it’s one of the funniest Daily Show clips I’ve ever seen - from about three years ago. You’ll never guess what Stephen Colbert’s real name is!

Lee Terry on The Colbert Report:

Ted Stevens, noted technology guru:

Wednesday Notes 4/11/07

  • Howard Dean will be at the Holiday Inn at 72nd & Grover today for an NDP event. A grassroots celebration starts at 6 P.M., $20 ticket price, $10 for college students, and free for high school students. Hope to see everyone there. BYEAAAH!
  • How’s this for a campaign commercial? Adrian Smith hates your dog! Or is that too similar to this ugliness from 2005?
  • Here’s a gem: Ken Svoboda says the Republican Party doesn’t do ugly attacks, and that he runs a positive campaign. For all the evidence you need to prove that Svoboda’s a liar, see the above item.
  • Don’t Forget! NYD Convention this Saturday @ Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. The convention begins at 11 am, and carpools will depart from UNO on Saturday morning, e-mail unodemocrats@yahoo.com for more details.
  • Remember Dave Hergert? Well, he’s in trouble again.
  • Author Kurt Vonnegut died today at age 84. R.I.P.
  • The Senate passed a stem cell research bill 63-34 today.
  • That’s all for now, I’ll get back to full-blown rant mode next week.
  • Oh, and, for those of you who are around me in the next few days, you’re probably going to wish that I’d shut up about King Felix. If you didn’t happen to catch tonight’s Red Sox-Mariners game, you missed one hell of a performance.

Friday Update

Excuse the mess, folks. Trying to get a few of these links up-to-date.

  • Yellow Dog University. Tomorrow. 9:30 A.M. @ the UNO Student Center. See the website for more details.
  • NNN: A “Nebraska bloc?” The fact that Hagel and Nelson are working together - let alone speaking to each other - is a very positive sign for Nebraska. Oh, and the Omaha World-Herald sucks for not putting their opinion pages online. Lame. Kyle thinks that McCollister just gave the signal to Nebraska Republicans to go after Hagel. It’s certainly not out of the realm of possibilities, now, that Chuck Hagel could be primaried like Joe Lieberman in 2006. Who will it be? My guess is Bruning. But I’m still not sure that Hagel’s running for reelection.
  • Paging Power has some video of Ernie Chambers during the debate on LB 405.
  • If you’ve got any questions about how the February 9, 2008 caucus will work, the NDP has posted its plan.
  • Glenn Greenwald on how “neoconservative radicalism has reshaped our political spectrum.”
  • The Lincoln Primary is on Tuesday, and Beutler’s fundraising advantage is still substantial. As of March 26, Beutler has $79,973.10 cash on hand, to Ken Svoboda’s $23,000.67. We’ll see how the votes come down on Tuesday, and then one month until the general election.

Tuesday Links for 3/27

  • REMINDER: Yellow Dog University is Saturday, March 31. The day begins at 9 am.
  • The Senate could begin voting today on H.R. 1591, which passed the House of Representatives last week. Minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), realizing that a filibuster would simply prevent funding for the war, said that the Republicans would not filibuster the bill, meaning a simple majority is required to pass through the Senate. John McCain will finally show up for a vote in an attempt to kill the withdrawal provisions in the bill. Ben Nelson and Chuck Hagel are two key swing votes. Both voted against a withdrawal measure a little over a week ago, but Nelson has pledged support for the Senate bill, and Hagel is teaming with Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) to add troop readiness provisions to the bill.
  • UPDATE: The Senate defeated, 50-48, an amendment that would have removed the withdrawal language from their version of the bill. The Senate bill calls for a nonbinding date of March 31, 2008, rather than the hard September 2008 date in the House version. Ben Nelson and Chuck Hagel voted against the amendment, ensuring its defeat.
  • An aide to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Monica Goodling, will invoke the fifth amendment in Senate hearings, citing self-incrimination. Kyle Sampson, Gonzales’ fired chief of staff, will testify on Thursday, and his testimony may contradict previous statements made by Gonzales to Congress. Gonzales is scheduled to testify on April 17.
  • Glenn Greenwald with a couple of great posts about our media. Hopelessly out of touch with reality. Atrios chimes in with the important distinction between those who report the news (mostly print journalists) and those who report on the news (mostly television pundits).
  • UPDATE II: We don’t pay much attention to politics across the river, but Iowa’s 5th Congressional District is represented by a certifiable wingnut named Steve King. It appears that he has his first challenger for 2008 (assuming that he doesn’t decide to challenge Tom Harkin for Senate), a Council Bluffs Democrat named Rob Hubler. I can’t find much on him. Even the prominent Iowa blogs haven’t heard of him. From what I can gather, though, his campaign looks amateur. Joyce Schulte ran against King in 2004 and 2006, losing both times. I’ve got to think that there’s an Iowa Democrat more qualified to face off against King. Mike Gronstal, for example, is the Senate Majority Leader from Council Bluffs. Obviously, he wouldn’t want to face an entrenched incumbent like King, but it suggests to me that there are western Iowa Democrats who could run a credible campaign against King.
  • UPDATE III: The death penalty debate in the legislature may get another shot. Sen. Brad Ashford of Omaha has proposed an amendment requiring juries to consider aggravating circumstances before imposing the death penalty. There will be a hearing on Friday, and if the proposal comes to the floor, it may have a better chance of passing than Chambers’ original bill, which called for the complete repeal of the death penalty. No telling what Heineman would do if the bill passed, but I’m guessing he’d veto it.
  • UPDATE IV: LB 405, to add 2 city council districts to Omaha, advanced to Select File by a vote of 25-16 (6 present and 2 not voting). Debate was heated and contentious. The bill still needs to go through two more rounds of voting in order to pass.
  • Don’t forget YDU on Saturday. A couple of other quick reminders:

Random Tuesday Notes

I don’t have any rants or speculation ready for today, so I’ll give you all a few links to read over.

  • The Legislature is considering LB 476, Ernie Chambers’ annual bill to repeal the death penalty. Remarkably, though, the debate seems to be fair, honest, and open. A rarity, indeed. UPDATE: The bill failed to advance by one vote, 24 in favor, 25 opposed. I’ve got to hand it to the legislature, though, this is a difficult issue, and they handled it honestly and allowed a vote on it without bitter attacks or political games. I’m sure Chambers will try again next year, his last year in the unicameral. As always, Paging Power has all the unicameral coverage.
  • The U.S. Attorneys scandal is spiraling out of control for the administration. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is likely on his way out, but this scandal goes beyond the Justice Department. Now comes news that the administration wanted to fire Patrick Fitzgerald - the special prosecutor for the Scooter Libby trial. Of course, that would have been incredibly hard to justify, as Fitzgerald received high praise for his skill as a prosecutor. As always, TPM and its sister site TPM Muckracker has an amazing amount of information on this case.
  • Another in a line of blatantly offensive Barack Obama articles.
  • Adam Conner has a great analysis at MyDD of a viral “1984″ pro-Obama/anti-Hillary YouTube ad. Even the generally pompous Joe Klein of Time Magazine has a good insight: “It’s increasingly apparent that the Great Divide in 2008 isn’t black v. white, or male v. female, but young v. old.”
  • Kyle has a good catch here: Jeff Fortenberry defends Nelnet’s highway robbery. Make no mistake - it’s corporations like this that are responsible for the massive amount of student debt in this country, and the fact that they’re allowed to get away with outright fraud is just despicable.
  • Bong Hits 4 Jesus! - arguments before the Supreme Court in a hilarious free speech case.
  • UPDATE: The City Council approved new district boundaries today. From the sound of it, NoDo will continue to be in District 2, Frank Brown’s district. The rest of the plan sounds like it will be the same as the original plan drawn up a few months ago and released to the public last month. As soon as we get an actual map of the districts, we’ll see what it looks like. If LB 405 passes, we’ll have to see the districts redrawn again, presumably moving districts 1, 2, 3, and 4 back further east.

A Few Updates

Just a few mid-week updates. I probably won’t have a whole lot to say over the weekend - March Madness and St. Patrick’s Day - but if there’s anything particularly newsworthy, I’ll update this post.

  • Don Walton on the media reaction to Hagel’s non-announcement.
  • Happy Birthday to the New Nebraska Network. Kyle has an interview with Chris Beutler up right now. Check it out.
  • Beutler’s showing strong fundraising numbers against his Republican opponent. He even got a contribution from Tom Osborne. Ken Svoboda’s biggest donor? You guessed it. $5,000 from Pete Ricketts. If you’re really interested, you can view the filings for Beutler and Svoboda at the NADC website.
  • Dwite Pederson made LB 405 his priority bill, and Gwen Howard became a cosponsor of the bill. I’m in favor of anything that makes things more democratic (small ‘d’) in Omaha, and I think the arguments about minority representation on the council can be easily overcome. I’m hopeful that this bill passes. It’s good for Omaha. It’s good for Elkhorn. It’s good for everyone involved.
  • Hagel goes in front of the IAFF (Firefighter’s union) today for a bipartisan cattle call. He’s the only unannounced Presidential candidate in the group. Rudy Giuliani was not invited. The firefighters hate Rudy.
  • Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is in a lot of hot water over the firing of eight U.S. Attorneys - including one who prosecuted Rep. Duke Cunningham - for seemingly political reasons. Talking Points Memo has been all over this story for a while now, and now Democrats in Congress, as well as the print and television media, are ramping up the pressure. Is this what accountability looks like?
  • The Senate will debate the Democratic proposal to withdraw all troops by March 31, 2008. It likely will not pass, unless a few Republicans grow a conscience (or remember that they are up for reelection in 2008).
  • UPDATE: The New York Times is opening up its subscription wall to college students and professors. If you have a valid university e-mail address, you can access TimesSelect for free. (h/t Eschaton). (Just a tip: check your spam filter. UNO especially blocks just about any e-mail that comes from an outside address).
  • UPDATE II: It was easy to miss this one from yesterday. The 9/11 Commission Act passed the Senate yesterday by a vote of 60-38. Chuck Hagel was among the 38 Republicans who voted against the bill.

That’s all for now. Enjoy the rest of your break, and be sure to show up Monday for Mike Fahey!

UPDATE: Elkhorn is now officially part of Omaha. Nature certainly has a sense of humor. After weeks of Elkhorn whining about how their streets won’t get plowed as quickly, we get hit with the biggest blizzard in a decade mere hours before the annexation is finalized.

Oh, and Happy 140th Birthday to Nebraska. Here’s a foot of snow. Have fun!

Friday News & Open Thread

- Barack Obama is set to officially announce his candidacy for President tomorrow in Springfield, Illinois. I’ve heard a lot of people talk about his experience, but I don’t care about that. We’ve supported candidates for office at every level who were political outsiders. Those were the most appealing campaigns, because too often, the “experienced” folks make the kind of compromising decisions that disgust the idealists among us. So, while he’s only been in the Senate two years, there’s no one I’d rather see as President than Barack Obama. Part of it is the fact that he is the only credible candidate that has opposed the war from the very beginning. Part of it is his message - the politics of hope over the politics of fear. And part of it is the type of campaign he promises to run. I’m genuinely excited about the idea of Barack Obama as President. And I know I’m not the only one.

- Of course, we have no real voice in the process, yet. Nebraska’s primary is scheduled for May 2008, when the nominees of both parties will likely be decided already. Steve Lathrop introduced a bill, LB 460, to establish a Presidential caucus in February ‘08. A hearing on that bill is scheduled for February 22nd. The state party is considering the move. At Saturday’s State Central Committee meeting, the Nebraska Democratic Party agreed to hold a caucus on February 9, 2008. A little bit more on this later. Just thought I’d pass along the info. But start thinking about who you are going to support, because you have a voice!

- I’m sure you all have seen the new Omaha.com by now. It’s hard to imagine how they could have made the new site worse than the old site (virtually unchanged since late 2000 - save for the removal of features like comments - and the addition of registration), but they did. While they got rid of the ridiculous registration requirement (at least, I think they did), they also removed half of the content from the site. There is no national newswire (save for the “elections” page), (Update: the national newswire has returned), the opinion pages, columnists, and public pulse have been entirely removed from online. The World-Herald has managed to, in the year 2007, entirely diminish their online presence to virtually nothing. Compare it to the Lincoln Journal-Star’s website.

- That seems as good a place as any to ask for any suggestions, comments, or tips on this website. We’ve brought a lot more content to the table over the last month and a half, and we’ll continue to do so. What else should we do?

Use this thread for any of the above topics or whatever else comes to your mind.

We’re all busy with school - finals and papers and other stuff, so things have been kind of slow around here lately. So here’s an open forum to speak your mind.

In the news lately:

Hal Daub is considering a run for Senate in 2008.

Chuck Hagel, who currently holds that seat, is considering a run for President in 2008.

The Iraq Study Group will recommend a gradual withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq, getting most troops out by 2008.

John Bolton will no longer be the U.N. Ambassador for the United States.

Newly elected Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) wanted to “slug” Bush over an insensitive remark about Webb’s son.
