Kerrey Decision Coming Soon

Omaha World-Herald:

Democrat Bob Kerrey says he’s “excited” about the prospect of running for the U.S. Senate again, but he said today that he still isn’t ready to commit to the race.

Kerrey said he would be calling friends and supporters in the next two days to explain to them the pros and cons of his running.

He wants them to know his thinking before he decides whether he’s in or out. A final decision will come “soon,” he said.

He declined to set a specific deadline. “I have to get it done soon, it’s all I know,” Kerrey said.

I’d expect something in the next week or so, but his comments in this article look encouraging.

This Week In Nebraska Politics: Game Of The Year Edition

As we wait for kickoff on a primetime matchup between Nebraska and USC, here’s the latest from around the state this week:

We’re getting very close, folks. Only a matter of time - is a triumphant homecoming in the works? Stay tuned.

NE Republicans: Shaking In Their Boots Over Bob Kerrey

The Nebraska GOP is just terrified of former Senator & Governor (and near rock-star) Bob Kerrey loading up for another Senate campaign.

Here’s a screen shot from the NEGOP website:
NEGOP Bob Cosmic Bob

Not only that, but besides their 360 word frontpage attack piece (with 13, count them 13 bullet points!), the only 2 press releases ago, they have another attack on Bob Kerrey (or as they call him, “Cosmic Bob”).

All this from a guy who hasn’t even said he’s going to run.

Personally, I think Fahey or Kleeb would be amazing candidates for Senate, and I kinda want to see one of them get the nomination. But when I look at how incredibly scared all the Republicans seem to be of Bob Kerrey, I get a little more excited to see him run.

Hagel Will Not Seek Re-Election

Don Walton confirms it:

Sen. Chuck Hagel will announce Monday he’ll not seek re-election next year.

Hagel also will tell an Omaha news conference he does not intend to be a candidate for any office in 2008, clamping a lid on speculation he might be pondering a late-inning presidential bid.

In a prelude to Monday’s announcement, he conferred Friday with Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

Later, Hagel gathered his Washington staff together to inform them of his decision, according to sources close to the senator.

Hagel’s departure at the end of 2008 will bring an end to a meteoric 12-year Senate ride that propelled him to national prominence as the most outspoken Republican opponent of President Bush’s Iraq war policies.

This Week In Nebraska Politics

Random Ramblings and notes for you on a Friday:

  • The Douglas County Democratic Party got some good all around press coverage for the 2008 caucus. More from our own Catherine Leo at the NDP here. Kyle discusses the Republican response here.
  • In case you missed it: Jon Bruning blatantly ignores campaign finance laws and pays for a newspaper ad with soft money.
  • Lincoln City Councilman Dan Marvin is running for state legislature, for the seat that will be vacated by DiAnna Schimek.
  • Ben Nelson says it’s time to change course in Iraq, and the surge isn’t working.
  • Chuck Hagel may be making an announcement in the next couple of weeks announcing his retirement, but I’d venture a guess that it won’t be on a Saturday.
  • State Senator Mick Mines makes it another potential legislative target in Douglas County, announcing his resignation from the unicameral - District 18.
  • Mike Lux of Open Left writes on Bob Kerrey and Scott Kleeb’s potential plans for 2008, saying that Kerrey for Senate is generally a good thing, and that Kleeb’s probably going to shoot for a rematch against Adrian Smith.
  • Last week, Lee Terry called for Larry Craig to resign. No word from Adrian Smith yet on what he thinks of Senator Craig’s behavior.
  • The Nebraska GOP is already trying to attack Kerrey’s voting record. Not sure such a strategy will work since it only serves to remind voters that Bob Kerrey has a record. Experienced Leader versus Partisan Hack, Round 2? One thing Jon Bruning doesn’t have that Ricketts did is the boatload of cash.
  • Speaking of Ricketts, it seems that he’s angling to be the new National Committeeman for the Nebraska Republican Party, after Hal Daub resigned the post. Ricketts seems ready and willing to buy the Nebraska Republican Party. And given his track record of electoral success, I’m sure that he’ll achieve great things in the future.

Kerrey Making A Move Toward Bid?

Don Walton has the story:

Bob Kerrey stepped to the brink of a possible 2008 Senate bid Thursday.

Kerrey placed a conference call to New School University trustees in New York City to inform them he may be returning to Nebraska.

A decision on whether to return to his roots and attempt to once again represent Nebraska in the Senate is likely “within the next couple of weeks,” Kerrey said in a telephone interview.

This pretty much lines up with the timeline of Hagel’s decision. By Labor Day, we’re going to know what the field looks like.

The national take from Kos. And the local take from the NNN.

I’ll put something up a little bit later when I have some time on my take.

Friday News & Notes

First of all, congratulations to Scott and Jane Kleeb on their new baby daughter!

There’s only so many times I can rehash the same old speculation about Chuck Hagel, but I’m more than happy to link to others’ speculation, so here you go:

Real Clear Politics not much new here, but still an interesting read.

Bob Novak (Douchebag of Liberty [™ Jon Stewart]) says Hagel is still considering a presidential bid and “soon will make his decision.” I’m still thinking it’s going to be around Labor Day, which puts us at just about a month until decision day. If he’s serious, though, he’ll do something that tips his hand in the interim, to soften the ground for a run.

Almost forgot that I hadn’t posted this here: Pat Flynn, a wingnut Republican who admits to getting into trouble with the law during his youth, entered the race for U.S. Senate in Nebraska. The Republican race promises to be a circus.

Hagel Gets Crushed In Q2 Fundraising

A couple of weeks ago, Jon Bruning released his Q2 fundraising numbers, coming in at over $720,000 for the quarter, a very good number for a primary challenger.

Now, incumbent Republican Senator Chuck Hagel, who two weeks ago said that his campaign would be “well beyond” the amount raised by Bruning, has clocked in at $387,000, a large portion of that coming from a May fundraiser featuring Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

The conventional wisdom crystallizing on the ground here is that Hagel is blocking for Johanns - though it’s unclear if Johanns will get in the race, and the longer he waits, the stronger Bruning looks.

As we move closer to the fall, expect some movement one way or the other.

Hagel Fuels More Speculation

On Meet The Press today, Chuck Hagel ruled out a bid for President as an independent.

He gave more cryptic answers when asked about his political plans:

“You try to keep as many options open for yourself in life as you can. And you try to be in a position where you’ve got some opportunities,” Hagel said.

“I also have said and said this when I first ran for the Senate after I got elected in 1996 that 12 years, two terms may be enough and that’s another option,” Hagel said.

“And then if there might be a place for me along the presidential road somewhere to try to have some influence and change the course of this country, then I’ll look at that. But the decision needs to be made soon and I’ll make it soon,” he added.

It’s really difficult to tell exactly where Hagel’s leaning right now. He clearly wants to have influence on the national scene, but he’s blown any chance of winning a Republican nomination for President by making sense on Iraq. And he’s in an increasingly vulnerable position here at home, as well. A primary challenger raising $700,000 in Q2 is very serious, indeed. It may be that by attempting to keep all of his options open, Hagel has shut the door on all of his options.

On the surface, Hagel seems like the ideal candidate for the Republicans to separate their party from the failures of George W. Bush in Iraq. But the GOP is increasingly a Cult of Bush, and Hagel’s apostasy on the Iraq War will not be easily forgiven by primary voters. He has zero chance of winning the Republican nomination.

An independent candidacy would be a fool’s errand, as Hagel would lack the donor base to mount a respectable campaign that would fare any better than Ralph Nader or Michael Badnarik in 2004. In other words, there’s even less of a chance that Hagel becomes President if he runs as an independent.

It seems that Hagel’s goal is relevance as he finalizes what, precisely, his plans will be in 2008. A chance at the Vice Presidency or a plum position in the next administration is probably his most likely avenue, but how he gets there is anyone’s guess.

Senate Q2 Fundraising Numbers

(Like I said, my frantic pace returns quickly.)

OWH:

Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning said Monday that he had raised $721,200 by the end of June to prepare for a possible campaign against incumbent U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel.

It’s not enough to scare Hagel away, though it’s certainly enough to suggest that Bruning’s not going to have much trouble raising money.

Hagel’s political director Kevin Chapman said Monday the campaign won’t report its fundraising figures until the deadline, “but we’ll be well beyond $700,000.”

Interesting statement. Was the high-dollar fundraiser that Hagel held back in May that successful? Hagel’s playing his cards pretty close to the vest, though Republican donors seem to think that hes going to opt out of a run for reelection. It’ll be interesting when the numbers come out just when his biggest contributions came, and from where.

It’s also worth noting that Bob Kerrey’s still got about $400,000 cash on hand from his old Senate campaign account, should he decide to run. And the Democratic donor base, together with money from the DSCC, can definitely hold its own - even when outspent by a significant margin. See the 2006 election for a good example. Whether it’s Kerrey, Fahey, or Kleeb, we’re going to be ready for another tough fight in 2008.
