Ernie Chambers vs. God

Oh, I bet Hal Daub thought he’d grab all of the headlines on Monday, but the always unpredictable senator from Nebraska’s 11th District had other plans. Ernie Chambers decided to sue God. Yeah, you read that correctly.

Chambers is apparently doing this to prove a point about frivolous lawsuits, prompted by a lawsuit that he sees as frivolous.

24 year-old Tory Bowen accused Pamir Safi, 33, of rape. At Safi’s trial, Bowen was barred from using language that described the crime. Words like “sexual assault” and “rape” were explicitly forbidden by judge Jeffre Cheuvront. Words like “sex” were allowed. As Bowen and her attorneys quite correctly point out, forcing her to describe a sexual assault as “sex” basically forces her to relive the crime, and lie on the stand, all at once. Bowen filed suit against Cheuvront for violating her first amendment rights. Chambers claims this is frivolous because the state supreme court has already ruled on this matter.

From the AP story:

Chambers says in his lawsuit that God has made terroristic threats against the senator and his constituents, inspired fear and caused “widespread death, destruction and terrorization of millions upon millions of the Earth’s inhabitants.”

The Omaha senator, who skips morning prayers during the legislative session and often criticizes Christians, also says God has caused “fearsome floods … horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes.”

He’s seeking a permanent injunction against the Almighty.

Hal Daub

Maybe this time the voters will like him?

Congressman Hal Daub challenged sitting U.S. Senator David Karnes in the Republican Primary in 1988. Karnes, who was appointed by unpopular governor Kay Orr after the death of Ed Zorinsky, won the nomination and then proceeded to get thrashed by - who else? - former Governor Bob Kerrey in the general election.

In 1990, Daub was back at it, challenging popular Democratic Senator Jim Exon, losing that election as well.

After a brief time away from the spotlight, he returned when Omaha Mayor P.J. Morgan decided he didn’t want to be mayor of Omaha anymore. Daub won the special election against Brenda Council in 1994, by a slim margin. In 1997, the margin was even slimmer, one of the closest elections in city history, as Daub defeated Council by a few hundred votes.

By 2001, though, Daub’s personality had grated the citizens of Omaha to the point where they not only threw him out - they took half the city council with him. It was another close election, Democrat Mike Fahey won by another slim margin, but the change in attitude at city hall was apparent. The era of divisiveness in Omaha was over. And as 2005’s election confirmed, Omaha responded to Mike Fahey.

Daub is asking the voters of Nebraska to give him another chance. He has yet to prove his worth of the first chance, and the voters of Nebraska roundly rejected him twice, already. Perhaps the third time is the charm for Daub? I’ve learned to never count out the willingness of Nebraska Republicans to nominate an unsuitable candidate for office, but a mayor of Omaha who even Omahans don’t like?

This Week In Nebraska Politics: Game Of The Year Edition

As we wait for kickoff on a primetime matchup between Nebraska and USC, here’s the latest from around the state this week:

We’re getting very close, folks. Only a matter of time - is a triumphant homecoming in the works? Stay tuned.

The Wait Is Over? - Monday

Chuck Hagel will announce his plans on Monday. Strong indications that he will announce his retirement.

This Week In Nebraska Politics

Random Ramblings and notes for you on a Friday:

  • The Douglas County Democratic Party got some good all around press coverage for the 2008 caucus. More from our own Catherine Leo at the NDP here. Kyle discusses the Republican response here.
  • In case you missed it: Jon Bruning blatantly ignores campaign finance laws and pays for a newspaper ad with soft money.
  • Lincoln City Councilman Dan Marvin is running for state legislature, for the seat that will be vacated by DiAnna Schimek.
  • Ben Nelson says it’s time to change course in Iraq, and the surge isn’t working.
  • Chuck Hagel may be making an announcement in the next couple of weeks announcing his retirement, but I’d venture a guess that it won’t be on a Saturday.
  • State Senator Mick Mines makes it another potential legislative target in Douglas County, announcing his resignation from the unicameral - District 18.
  • Mike Lux of Open Left writes on Bob Kerrey and Scott Kleeb’s potential plans for 2008, saying that Kerrey for Senate is generally a good thing, and that Kleeb’s probably going to shoot for a rematch against Adrian Smith.
  • Last week, Lee Terry called for Larry Craig to resign. No word from Adrian Smith yet on what he thinks of Senator Craig’s behavior.
  • The Nebraska GOP is already trying to attack Kerrey’s voting record. Not sure such a strategy will work since it only serves to remind voters that Bob Kerrey has a record. Experienced Leader versus Partisan Hack, Round 2? One thing Jon Bruning doesn’t have that Ricketts did is the boatload of cash.
  • Speaking of Ricketts, it seems that he’s angling to be the new National Committeeman for the Nebraska Republican Party, after Hal Daub resigned the post. Ricketts seems ready and willing to buy the Nebraska Republican Party. And given his track record of electoral success, I’m sure that he’ll achieve great things in the future.

Stay Away From Public Restrooms and Republicans

We begin with the most unfortunate opening line in an “I’m not gay” speech ever…

But what’s lost in the story - and in all stories of this type - is the issue: the problem isn’t that he’s gay, it’s that he’s a pervert! The same with Jeff Gannon, the gay prostitute who posed as a White House reporter - the issue wasn’t that he was gay, or even that he was a partisan hack posing as a White House reporter, it’s that he was a hooker! Mark Foley? He was a sexual predator.

The issue is the hypocrisy of it all. And every time a gay Republican is outed in a very public way, they try to dodge the issue - and by extension smear the entire GLBT community. The hypocrisy, the lies, and the disconnect from reality is really quite appalling. And the level of scandal is reaching the point of absurdity.

Anti-Immigration Protestors Show Their True Colors

If you’ve been around Omaha for the last couple of years, you may have noticed the protestors that show up every so often in front of the Consulado de Mexico on 36th and Dodge St. Their thinly-veiled racism, however, is no match for the atrocious display of racism that is coming this weekend:

The National Socialist Movement will shut down Dodge street Saturday to protest illegal immigration.  The Nazi protest at the Mexican Consulate is becoming a cause for community concern. So much concern in fact, the white supremacist group will receive a police escort in and out of Omaha as well as police security during the event, according to both the Consulate and protestors.

Well, that’s great. I’m sure the people of Omaha will appreciate a bunch of Nazis choking off the main artery to the city for a few hours. Fortunately, everyone will be glued to their TV sets watching the season opener between Nebraska and Nevada, but that’s not the point. It’s disturbing how similar the Nazi message is to the right-wing party line on immigration. Put this together with the rising ranks of the KKK in recent years because of strong feelings against immigration, and it’s not hard to see what kind of people are driving the debate on this issue. And it’s sickening.

“This is not Mexico and we don’t want it to be Mexico,” says Col. Tim Bishop with the National Socialist Movement. Illegal immigration threatens the self described Nazi group’s main goal.

“The preservation and the promotion of the white Arian Caucasian people,” says Bishop.

And it’s at this point that we have to bring up the thing that fails to get through to these people each and every time:

Only the swastika emblazoned protest against illegal immigrants will happen outside the one place in Omaha Mexicans can obtain legal identification. “I guess because it has a Mexican flag out front or they misinterpret what we do,” says the Consul.

“They’re telling people to come here. They’re telling people where they can get social services. They’re telling people how to exploit the system,” says Bishop.

At least these folks make their racism very clear, so it becomes easier to expose the racism of those who hold the exact same beliefs as them. How could this not be blatantly obvious at this point? This isn’t about “border security” or “amnesty” or any of the other buzz words that politicians in Washington like to throw around. This is about Mexicans. This is about fear. Quite simply, this is racism.

And it’s unfortunately very politically acceptable, to the point where people who should know better are buying into the buzzwords and phrases. To the point where people are treated like criminals and separated from their families for wanting to make a better life in America. To the point where the “compromise” position has us relegating people to a status of virtually permanent indentured servitude.

One last point, which I cannot stress enough: Don’t take the bait.

The Consul’s concern is not the demonstration but the potential for violent public reaction and damage to his building. “A counter-demonstration is not productive in any way and that’s exactly what these people are looking for.”

Bruning Screws Over College Students

Kyle puts the pieces together on Nelnet and our Attorney General, Jon Bruning.

But while the focus is on taxpayers, it’s a sad and troubling thing that - once again - the needs of students are completely ignored by our government. Not that we should be surprised - Bruning has taken $16,000 in contributions from Nelnet - but it’s very disappointing nonetheless.

Simply because they do business in Nebraska doesn’t excuse them from wrongdoing. In fact, it makes Bruning’s job all the more important, and his willingness to look the other way a sad commentary on just how seriously he takes his job. Clearly, Jon Bruning is not interested in doing the job he was elected to do.

Every year, the cost of tuition goes up, and every year, less financial aid is available to students. The financial aid that is available comes at a future cost - and Nelnet is there to take advantage. All the while, they lobby the government to raise interest rates on student loans, increase their stranglehold on providing those loans, and steal just about $300 million from the federal government without any worry of geting caught because they are the largest contributor to the Republican Party. A college education is more important than ever, and the ability to afford that education is becoming more difficult each day. Every day that our chief law enforcement officer decides he doesn’t really want to do his job is a day that college students in this state get screwed over.

Exciting News!

Kyle Michaelis at the New Nebraska Network has just launched NNN 2.0, a community based blog with user diaries (like those used at Kos and MyDD). It’s an exciting new step for the online progressive movement in Nebraska, and I encourage everyone to check it out and join in the discussion.

Also, don’t worry - the UNO Democrats Blog isn’t going anywhere. And with just three weeks left until a new school year, we’ve got plenty planned for the future. Stay tuned.
