It’s time for another semester! Welcome back to all the familiar faces and hello to all the new members. Let’s make 2007-08 another fantastic year!
First Meeting of the Year
Monday, August 27, 8 PM
MBSC Council Room (3rd Floor)
Former UNO Dems Presidents Chad Brakhahn, Ryan Renner, and Cody Farrens, and UNO Dems member Megan Ring have all graduated from the University of Nebraska-Omaha today. These four have given so much of their time and effort to this group. It’s not going to be quite the same without them. Just remember, in the fall, you’re always welcome on the alumni couch (that couch might get a little crowded, soon). Until then, we’ll see you at Clancy’s!
Photos from the first night of Tribute are up in the photo gallery. We’ll be adding more as the week goes on. Special thanks so far to 40 or so volunteers who showed up to place flags, and the the members of the media (CBS, NBC, Fox, and the Omaha World-Herald so far…) who have covered the event.
Also of course a very special thanks to Mayor Mike Fahey, Councilman Suttle, Councilman Gernandt, Sen. Tom White, Douglas Co. Treasurer John Ewing, and Douglas County Registrar of Deeds Diane Battiatto for their kind words at the opening ceremony.
As always, don’t forget to check www.tributetothefallen.com for more updates.

Last year, on April 25, 2006, the UNO Democrats presented a Tribute to the Fallen. This week, we are privileged and honored to again present this Tribute to the men and women who have given their lives in service to this great nation.
The war in Iraq inspires intense feelings on both sides of the aisle, as frequent readers of this blog can no doubt attest. But above all else, we hold nothing but the highest respect for the men and women fighting in Iraq right now. And it is with deep respect and the utmost dignity that we present this tribute to our fallen soldiers.
Last year, we placed 2,390 flags, each representing one life lost in this war. Since then, almost 1,000 more American soldiers have died in Iraq. But they are more than just numbers, they were brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, husbands, wives, fathers, and mothers. Many of them were our age. Each loss is tragic, the grief shared by their friends and family unimaginable. These soldiers deserve our highest respect. They all fought and died for this country, for the very freedoms that make this nation so great.
Regardless of what you believe about the war in Iraq, we hope that you will join with us this week in honoring the sacrifice that these brave young men and women have made for this country. And that they will not be forgotten. That the scope of this tragedy is more than just a number, but something that all of us can see.
Please join us on Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. begin our Tribute, reading the names of each fallen soldier, and on Thursday evening at 5 p.m. as we honor the Nebraska soldiers who have died in Iraq. All throughout the week, the flags will remain standing, a reminder of the sacrifice of each and every man and woman to whom we pay Tribute.
I want to encourage everyone to apply for the 2007 Campus Progress National Conference, in Washington DC.
The conference is June 26th, though there are events the two days before and the day after. All the information you might want is on their website, so I won’t re-list it here.
But I will add a personal note, that UNO Democrats have attended the conference the last two years, payed for 100% by Campus Progress.
Even if CP didn’t offer need-based travel subsidies, the trip would be well worth paying for yourself because the training sessions, amazing speakers, and most of all the other Campus Progress kids from around the country are absolutely amazing. The experience is one-of-a-kind.
Last year CP put us up in George Washington University Dorms (HOVA Dorms…. we blasted Jay-Z all night); and there was even free breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
So I’m telling you: apply. And if you can’t afford a trip to DC, tell them so.
CP is dedicated to making sure financial need doesn’t hold back any young activists.
President: Karlee Coleman
Vice President (Campus): Nick Delman
Vice President (Community): Jared Brower
Secretary: Rachel Dick
Treasurer: Laura Setchell
Tonight, we’ll be electing a new set of officers. It’s one of the realities of a college-based organization that eventually folks are going to graduate and move on, (some of us are just taking a little longer to do that.) We’re fortunate to have such a great dedicated group of individuals ready to step up and take over, but I want to take a moment to recognize our outgoing President, Cody Farrens.
I joined UNO Dems about two years ago, and can’t quite imagine the last two years without Cody. I think he truly led this group to greater heights, and he’s been a great friend to all of us.
So, here’s to you, Cody. From all of us, thank you. And you know where to find us on Monday nights.
Well, folks, we’re all ready for break, which means no “official” meeting next week (you know where to find us). But when we come back from break next Monday, we’ve got to hit the ground running for a few big events over the next couple of months. What better way to start than a meeting with the Mayor of our fine city on Monday, March 19?
If you haven’t been to a meeting in a while, or if you want to get involved, we meet at 8 PM every Monday in the Council Room, 3rd floor of the Student Center. Hope to see all the familiar faces and some new faces as well.
We’re getting some campuswide press lately, in case you haven’t seen it.
First, from Friday’s edition of the Gateway:
No one can say the left-leaning students at UNO don’t know how to have a good time.
The UNO College Democrats aren’t just about politics. It’s a social organization too.
After each of their weekly meetings, the group’s members convene at Clancy’s for pizza or a few beers.
“We’re a group of friends, and we want to provide an open environment where people can get together, have fun and get informed,” said Cody Farrens, a senior political science major and president of the UNO College Democrats. “People can come and help with elections and help with the community.”
And, of course, this quote in the article from our own Chief:
“We’re attractive people [who are] having fun and making a difference,” said College Democrats member Ryan Renner.
Couldn’t have summed it up better.
We’re also in today’s edition (bottom front page) for our efforts putting together Yellow Dog University. No link to that article, yet, but you can pick it up on campus for now and I’ll link to it when it comes online.
UPDATE: The Yellow Dog University article is online here.
Congratulations to the UNO College Dems Women’s Caucus!
In order to celebrate Valentines Day, and raise HPV awareness, the UD-WC handed out about 1000 Valentines (with condoms on them).
The event was a huge success and an amazing inaugural event for the Caucus!
Thanks to Kar, Nick, Megan, and everyone else who was so involved in this project…
And Happy Valentines Day from the UNO College Democrats!
