NE-Sen: DSCC Recruiting Failed Bush Nominee

Ryan Anderson at the New Nebraska Network reported this morning on the increased chatter that Republican businessman Tony Raimondo was considering running for Senate… as a Democrat. This is a terrifying proposition, as I will explain in a moment, but worse than that is the information that we are hearing from several sources: the DSCC and the NDP are actively recruiting Raimondo to run for this Senate seat. Their logic? Money trumps all. Because it worked so well for 2006 Republican Senate candidate Pete Ricketts.

In 2004 Tony Raimondo was the Bush Administration’s pick for the newly created position of “manufacturing czar”, but after an outcry from the left (led brilliantly by the John Kerry campaign) his name was withdrawn from consideration. Why?

TONY RAIMONDO OUTSOURCED AMERICAN JOBS: When President Bush created the position last year he said the nation had “lost thousands of jobs in manufacturing…some of it because production moved overseas.” And some of the jobs moved overseas were moved by Tony Raimondo. In 2002, just four months after laying off 75 U.S. workers, Raimondo announced he planned to build “a $3 million factory in northwest Beijing…employing 180.” For his part, Raimondo was “unavailable for comment” because he was on a “business trip to China.”

TONY RAIMONDO IS HOSTILE TO WORKERS: Raimondo is “a longtime board member of the National Association of Manufacturers,” a group that is notorious for opposing efforts to improve conditions for American workers. NAM has lobbied to strip 8 million workers of federal overtime protections, consistently opposed any effort to increase the minimum wage to keep up with inflation and fought workplace safety laws.

TONY RAIMONDO IS A UNION BUSTER: According to the business publication Inc. Magazine, shortly after Raimondo took over Behlen in 1982 he pushed hard to decertify the labor union operating at his company. Raimondo coached management to sweet talk likely union supporters just prior to the vote and, on a close vote, was able to bust the union. Later, Raimondo said that had he not been able to get rid of the union he was not sure he would “have had the courage or determination” to continue operating the company.

TONY RAIMONDO FACED FINES FOR WORKPLACE VIOLATIONS: Under Raimondo’s leadership Behlen has been accused by the federal government of maintaining unsafe working conditions. On 5/16/98 The Omaha World-Herald reported “the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has proposed a $123,000 fine against Behlen Manufacturing Co. of Columbus for alleged safety violations that resulted in an employee being injured.”

TONY RAIMONDO SHILLED BUSH’S TAX CUTS FOR THE WEALTHY: On 2/7/01 the Omaha World-Herald reported “Bush was meeting with Nebraskan Tony Raimondo and dozens of other small business executives as part of his weeklong effort to build momentum for his tax package.” Raimondo was a natural ally - he had twice given the maximum contribution to Bush’s presidential campaign. The tax cuts Raimondo supported will cut the taxes of a middle class manufacturing worker (making about $35,000 year) $560 next year. Meanwhile the top 1% of earners (who make, on average, about $1 million a year) will rake in over $41,000 because of the tax cuts.

Will the next item on this list be: TONY RAIMONDO IS YOUR NOMINEE FOR SENATE?

We need to fight this. We have the opportunity to recruit a real
warrior in this race, Scott Kleeb, who will make Democrats stand up
and be proud. But we are in danger of having Scott passed over in
favor of a George Bush Republican with a large bank account. We need
to send the DSCC a strong message today: our party is not for sale.
Not to Tony Raimondo. Not to George Bush. Not to anyone.

Chapter of the Year, 2007

UNO Dems President Karlee Coleman with former Presidents Chad Brakhahn and Cody Farrens.

Congratulations to the UNO College Democrats on another successful year, and being awarded the 2007 Nebraska Young Democrats Chapter of the Year. From the HPV awareness campaign, to Yellow Dog University, campaign invasions, Tribute to the Fallen, and everything else we’ve done in the past year, it’s been a hell of a year. Let’s make sure that next year is even more successful!

Welcome To The Real World…

Saturday, at the Nebraska Young Democrats’ Forever Young Dinner, we presented an award to Jon Bruning, the “Fallen Star” Award. Lamenting the loss of a bright, young liberal voice to the winds of political ambition. Jordan McGrain, the Bruning campaign manager, responded to our press release in the North Platte Telegraph on Saturday. I’m sure had he seen the presentation, particularly the golden flip-flop, he might even have tried to be more condescending than he was in this article:

“That’s exactly what this is,” he said. “Let’s not try to find a way to get Democratic voters out to register, let’s try to figure out how to do something for ourselves. This is just something to get them a little attention.”

McGrain said the Young Democrats are not allowing anyone the personal and professional growth that years of life and experience in public office can offer.

“Life experience and common sense are the obvious factors that contributed to the evolution of Jon Bruning’s political views from college student to attorney general,” McGrain said. “I’m confident that once these Young Democrats actually get out into the world, they’ll have a similar awakening. Until then, they can bide their time without a credible Democratic candidate for senate by awarding imaginary honors to the leaders on the Republican side.”

The Forever Young Dinner is, of course, a fundraising dinner put on by the Nebraska Young Democrats each year. The money raised from this event goes toward the activities of NYD. Things like, yes, registering Democratic voters. Someone like McGrain surely understands the value of a good fundraiser…

But it’s that last part, the part that - once again - presumes that young liberals are sheltered individuals who have no sense of how the real world works, that reveals just how patronizing these folks can be. So, let me tell you how it is in the real world:

In the real world, 3,849 American soldiers and countless numbers of Iraqi civilians have lost their lives. In the real world, those soldiers were sent to war against a country with no weapons of mass destruction, no ties to al-Qaeda or 9/11, and no immediate threat to the United States of America. These are indisputable facts at this point, confirmed by several independent commissions including the 9/11 Commission, the Iraq Study Group, and the Iraq Survey Group sent to find the alleged WMDs. But the Republican Party, including Jon Bruning, continues to link Iraq with 9/11, and ignore the calls of the vast majority of Americans to bring our troops home.

In the real world,  47 million Americans live without health insurance. 36 million live in poverty. Democrats like us are committed to the cause of universal health care, and helping those in poverty. But the Republican Party, including Jon Bruning, refuses to acknowledge these real problems, focusing on strawmen arguments about “socialized medicine.”

In the real world, it is becoming more and more difficult each day for a young person to afford an education. The cost of student loans keeps getting higher as corrupt lenders like Nelnet rob our government of hundreds of millions of dollars, and continue to rake students over the coals. But Republicans like Jon Bruning would rather declare that they are “a friend of Nelnet,” than risk losing the campaign contributions that come from being such a willing corporate shill.

That Jon Bruning used to be an uncompromising liberal makes his current positions even more disturbing. This is someone who has no principle - no guiding focus other than his own political advancement. The writings of young Jon Bruning were well-thought out, reasoned, and focused. They were not rantings, and there is no “evolution” that turns a deep blue donkey into a crimson red elephant in the course of four years. Jon Bruning wanted to become “something,” Governor, Senator, I’m willing to guess that with his ego he someday envisions himself as President. And to do that, he was willing to sacrifice everything he claimed to believe in.

I could close by telling Bruning and McGrain to get a sense of humor, but there’s nothing funny about the contempt they have for the young people of this state.

Kerrey’s Out

Disappointing news, for sure:

I have decided I will not leave The New School to become a candidate for the United States Senate in Nebraska. The reason is simple enough: For my family and me now is not the time for me to re-enter politics as a candidate.

You have to respect the reasons, and to be fair to BK, he was always upfront about his thought process.

But he is right that there are important challenges facing us, and those challenges do not just go away because Bob Kerrey decided not to run. We’ve had a lot of disappointment in the last couple of weeks, from Jim Esch’s ultimate decision not to run again, and Kerrey’s decision today. Now it’s time to move forward. To bring the message to the people of Nebraska. To start a new day.

Mike Johanns

As Johanns announced his candidacy for Senate, the DSCC rolled out a new web ad focusing on Johanns’ “leaving the field” yet again.

Great Post From Jane Flemming: Young Voters Do Not Equal Unicorns

Jane Flemming Kleeb is most famous in Nebraska recently for being Scott’s wife. Most people also know she was the brilliant Executive Director for YDA, and a few people know she is still currently the go-to-gal for the Young Voter PAC. But did you know she has a blog?

And this week she knocked one out of the park:

Young voters are not mythical unicorns; we don’t just show up out of nowhere nor do we just live in a candidate’s dreams. Any candidate who wants a young person’s vote must target us, talk to us about issues we care about and then have a field and messaging program to get us to the polls or caucus.

In a recent article on CBS.com, “Could A “Hidden” Youth Vote Propel Obama?”, old stereotypes and old political thinking shone through with every political professional interviewed.

One university professor restated old comments about young people being cynical. Over 75% of young people volunteer on a regular basis. We turned out to vote in record numbers in 2004 and 2006 with the largest increase in voting of any age group.

It is not a pipe dream that young people will show up for Obama. However, if Obama makes the same mistakes as other candidates in the past including Dean, that is assuming because we come to a rally or visit a website that we will turn out to vote, than young people may stay home (and will probably be “blamed” if Obama does lose).

However, if Obama’s campaign, or any of the candidates for that matter, target young people with the same amount of resources and time as they do any other age group or constituency group than young voters will show up.

I suggest you read the rest of her blog here.

Rudy & Hillary & ???

giuliani.jpg

James Dobson of Focus on the Family penned an op-ed for the New York Times today, stating in no uncertain terms that Rudy Giuliani would be an unacceptable choice for the religious right in 2008:

After two hours of deliberation, we voted on a resolution that can be summarized as follows: If neither of the two major political parties nominates an individual who pledges himself or herself to the sanctity of human life, we will join others in voting for a minor-party candidate. Those agreeing with the proposition were invited to stand. The result was almost unanimous.

What happens if a third party runs against Giuliani? Rasmussen has the answer:

The poll finds that 27% of Republican voters would rather vote for a third-party Christian right candidate in a general election than vote for Rudy Giuliani — and that’s in a three-way race with Hillary Clinton. The hypothetical three-way race shows Hillary with 46% support, Rudy at 30%, and the third-party conservative with 14%. Among self-described pro-life voters, Rudy gets only 36% support, with the third-party candidate at 29% and Hillary with 23%. Not just that, but Rudy gets only 25% of pro-choice voters, with Hillary still walking away comfortably with 65%.”

Then you’ve got polling that shows very real signs that the “Hillary is poison in red states” theory is simply a myth - (and yeah, Edwards looks even better in those polls - a lead in Oklahoma?) and the hero of the conservative movement getting stuck back when Bush the Elder was President. (Seriously, the Soviet Union? Thompson basically oozes incompetence just based on that one statement - and that’s before you look at the rest of his foreign policy). Then you have the Log Cabin Republicans “endorsing” Mitt Romney with a clever ad. We’re going to see an interesting campaign season. And that’s before we even talk about Nebraska Republicans tearing each other apart.
