2007 - A Year In Review

Looking back at the year that was in 2007.

January:

4: The new Democratic majority is sworn in and Nancy Pelosi is elected the first female Speaker of the House.

5: Lee Terry throws the first of many hissy-fits of the year on the House floor.

8: UNO Democrats hold our first meeting of the semester.

10: Bush lays out his “Surge” strategy in Iraq.

12: Elkhorn loses its annexation battle with Omaha.

16: Barack Obama forms a presidential exploratory committee.

20: Hillary Clinton announces her candidacy for President.

22: Lee Terry sleeps on an air mattress in his office.

31: The Mooninites shut down Boston. Meatwad is still at large.

February

10: Barack Obama announces his candidacy for President.

Nebraska Democrats vote to hold a caucus on February 9, 2008.

11: Mike Fahey considers a run for Senate.

14: UNO Democrats Women’s Caucus members hand out valentines with condoms to raise awareness of HPV.

23: Tom Vilsack drops out of the Democratic Presidential contest.

24: Nebraska Young Democrats stage a campaign invasion in Lincoln to help Chris Beutler’s campaign for mayor.

March:

12: Hey, I have a great idea! Let’s call a huge press conference, play it like I’m going to run for President, gather all the media here in Omaha, and then tell them that I will make a decision later this year! They’ll love it! Man, I really want to hire Chuck Hagel’s communications team. They really know what they’re doing.

15: Jon Bruning says he’ll run for Senate, but that he’s “a Hagel guy.”

19: Mike Fahey meets with the UNO College Democrats.

The 4th anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

31: Our second annual Yellow Dog University.

April:

3: Chris Beutler has an impressive showing in the Lincoln primary, getting 47.5% of the vote.

9: Karlee Coleman is elected President of UNO Democrats.

14: NYD Convention at Doane College in Crete, NE. Kyle Michaelis is elected President of NYD.

19: Jon Bruning is not a Hagel guy.

20: Bob Kerrey mulls a run for U.S. Senate.

24: UNO Democrats present our second annual Tribute To The Fallen.

May:

1: The 4th anniversary of Mission Accomplished.

Chris Beutler wins his race for Mayor of Lincoln.

2: Tony Raimondo says he’s going to run for Senate. As a Republican. Remember that last part, it’ll be important later.

7: Is it the beginning of the end for Rosenblatt?

11: HAL DAUB!

18-20: Nebraska Young Democrats host YDA’s spring National Conference in Omaha. Bill Richardson is a guest at the conference.

June:

7: Jon Bruning is still not a Hagel guy.

14: Raimondo makes still more moves toward running for Senate. As a Republican.

26: Bong Hits 4 Jesus!

Scott Kleeb sends a message to his supporters - calling for a “new brand of politics.”

July:

2: Scooter Libby has his sentence commuted by Bush.

12: One of the Ricketts wants to buy the Cubs.

18-21: Several UNO Democrats join the Nebraska delegation to YDA’s National Convention in Dallas.

28: Bong Hits 4 Jesus!!

31: Scott and Jane Kleeb’s daughter Maya is born.

August:

3: Watch yourself, Lee Terry. Jesse Jackson, Jr. can totally kick your ass.

6: NNN 2.0 launches.

9: Jon Bruning - still not a Hagel guy - screws over college students.

27: First meeting of Fall 2007.

28: “I’d like to thank you all for coming out today.” - Larry Craig.

September:

7: Chuck Hagel announces he will not seek re-election.

17: HAL DAUB!

Ernie Chambers sues God.

Douglas County Democrats organize a trip to Indianola, IA, for the Tom Harkin Steak Fry.

19: Mike Johanns announces for Senate.

28: HAL DAUB!?

October:

15: Steve Pederson fired as Nebraska Athletic Director.

16: Tom Osborne hired as interim AD.

22: Jim Esch decides not to run for Congress.

24: Bob Kerrey decides not to run for U.S. Senate.

November:

3: NYD’s Forever Young Dinner. UNO Democrats win Chapter of the Year for 2007.

Jon Bruning - still not a Hagel guy - fires one last parting shot at the Nebraska Young Democrats before the embarrasment of his “Fallen Star” Award causes him to drop out two weeks later.

19: Tony Raimondo’s name surfaces as a possible Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate.

24: Bill Callahan fired as Nebraska head coach.

December:


2: Bo Pelini named Nebraska head coach.

3: Scott Kleeb releases a video message to his supporters.

5: A shooting at Westroads Mall in Omaha leaves nine people dead.

President Bush visits Omaha. UNO Democrats give him a welcome.

10: Jared Brower is elected President of UNO College Democrats.

This is just scratching the surface. 2008 is going to be a busy year and a fun year for the UNO Colelge Democrats. Happy New Year!

    This is great! I especially like that entry on the 10th of December. Looking back, it was a really fun year. I hope we can take that excitement into this upcoming semester!
