More 2008 news for all of you. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), the chairman of the DSCC, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) recently met with Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey in Washington, D.C., fueling speculation that Fahey may run for Senate in 2008.
It’s no secret in Democratic circles right now that Fahey’s the top choice of Nebraska Democrats to run for the U.S. Senate seat that will likely be vacated by Chuck Hagel in 2008. And he’s given hints in the past that he may be interested in seeking the seat – if it were vacant. But this may be the strongest indication yet that he might run.
Much of this still depends on Hagel’s retirement from the Senate seat, but we’ve seen almost no indication that he is running for reelection – anemic fundraising and a number of Republicans already chomping at the bit to run for the seat seems to suggest that he’s not running. But there are no guarantees.
If Hagel does choose to retire or run for President, Fahey would be an excellent candidate for Senate and an excellent Senator if elected.
