- Barack Obama is set to officially announce his candidacy for President tomorrow in Springfield, Illinois. I’ve heard a lot of people talk about his experience, but I don’t care about that. We’ve supported candidates for office at every level who were political outsiders. Those were the most appealing campaigns, because too often, the “experienced” folks make the kind of compromising decisions that disgust the idealists among us. So, while he’s only been in the Senate two years, there’s no one I’d rather see as President than Barack Obama. Part of it is the fact that he is the only credible candidate that has opposed the war from the very beginning. Part of it is his message - the politics of hope over the politics of fear. And part of it is the type of campaign he promises to run. I’m genuinely excited about the idea of Barack Obama as President. And I know I’m not the only one.
- Of course, we have no real voice in the process, yet. Nebraska’s primary is scheduled for May 2008, when the nominees of both parties will likely be decided already. Steve Lathrop introduced a bill, LB 460, to establish a Presidential caucus in February ‘08. A hearing on that bill is scheduled for February 22nd. The state party is considering the move. At Saturday’s State Central Committee meeting, the Nebraska Democratic Party agreed to hold a caucus on February 9, 2008. A little bit more on this later. Just thought I’d pass along the info. But start thinking about who you are going to support, because you have a voice!
- I’m sure you all have seen the new Omaha.com by now. It’s hard to imagine how they could have made the new site worse than the old site (virtually unchanged since late 2000 - save for the removal of features like comments - and the addition of registration), but they did. While they got rid of the ridiculous registration requirement (at least, I think they did), they also removed half of the content from the site. There is no national newswire (save for the “elections” page), (Update: the national newswire has returned), the opinion pages, columnists, and public pulse have been entirely removed from online. The World-Herald has managed to, in the year 2007, entirely diminish their online presence to virtually nothing. Compare it to the Lincoln Journal-Star’s website.
- That seems as good a place as any to ask for any suggestions, comments, or tips on this website. We’ve brought a lot more content to the table over the last month and a half, and we’ll continue to do so. What else should we do?
Use this thread for any of the above topics or whatever else comes to your mind.
If Obama can even do half the things he wants to accomplish, this country would be a much better place. He is a phenomenal speaker and a seemingly honest, energetic, moral man. How great would it be to have faith in our government again? However, I have not evaluated all the candidates yet. It is too early for me to decide who to support.
One reason I like Obama is that he would probably produce more action on the tragedies occurring in Africa. Just because Africa doesn’t produce our precious oil doesn’t mean that it doesn’t deserve some of our attention. Also, I believe that Obama would be less influenced by religious groups and big businesses, which don’t have a place in politics in my opinion. I want to see a president who embraces stem cell research, women’s rights, and public opinion instead of exploiting misconceptions in order to please the far right. Gosh and if we could figure out a way to reduce the extreme military spending, I can only image how many schools could be built, how much research could be funded (ect, ect.), and seeing that ever growing debt disappear.
Furthermore, I want a president who will stop ignoring the threat of global warming. With the recent reports of cover ups, I think it is about time the largest producer of green house gases in world makes some changes. Destroying the world for future generations is NOT A FAMILY VALUE.
Sorry my thoughts are so random. I am just excited about the 2008 elections.
I’m not going to go off on some long diatribe about why I am such a huge Obama fan, but I do really implore you guys to check out his website (www.barackobama.com) and watch his videos. I understand if you decide to support other people… but if you watch him speak and feel the same way I do, think he is spark that can wake our country up like other great presidents in the past, think he has the right ideas and the right mentality to inspire… then check out his website, join the Omaha Metro supporters group I started and other groups in the area and use some of your free time to help him make our country evolve into something better.
There… enough ranting… damn man, Clancy’s glasses of wine are LARGE, hahaha
