Okay, this isn’t really a Nebraska story. But there are a number of people in our group who care about New Orleans, a number of people who have spent extensive hours volunteering with recovery efforts. And this is, quite frankly, sickening.
In case there was any doubt where Joe Lieberman’s true loyalties lie, after he became Bush’s chief Democratic cheerleader on Iraq; after he (quite literally) embraced Bush at the State of the Union Address; after he announced his intention to ignore the will of the voters in the Connecticut Primary; after he followed through on that threat despite losing the nomination; after he won reelection to the Senate on the backs of Republican voters. In case there was any doubt that Joe Lieberman, Party of One, is no longer a Democrat, there comes this.
Lieberman managed to force Senate Democrats to give him the chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security Committee in exchange for a promise to caucus with the Democrats. This committee is responsible for oversight of the Department of Homeland Security, and, by extension, FEMA - and thus the response to Hurricane Katrina.
Sen. Joe Lieberman, the only Democrat to endorse President Bush’s new plan for Iraq, has quietly backed away from his pre-election demands that the White House turn over potentially embarrassing documents relating to its handling of the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans.
Lieberman’s reversal underscores the new role that he is seeking to play in the Senate as the leading apostle of bipartisanship, especially on national-security issues. On Wednesday night, Bush conspicuously cited Lieberman’s advice as being the inspiration for creating a new “bipartisan working group” on Capitol Hill that he said will “help us come together across party lines to win the war on terror.”
I don’t have a great deal more to say on the subject. But I thought I should pass it along to all of you.
