Stem cell research a key issue in Ferlic-Russell regents race - Omaha World-Herald
If Carol Russell has her way, her support for embryonic stem cell research at the University of Nebraska Medical Center will help her unseat Regent Randy Ferlic.
If Ferlic has his way, he’ll show that there are more important issues, such as minimizing student debt and maximizing job opportunities for university students.
Ferlic, who has received the endorsement of Nebraska Right to Life, said the regents don’t have much control over the research. The federal government, not the Board of Regents, determines the guidelines and public funding for embryonic stem cell research, he said.
“It’s like asking the City Council, ‘Do you think we should be at war in Iraq?’”
But the regents could conceivably vote to ban embryonic stem cell research at the university, Russell said after the meeting.
I’m sure Ferlic has touted his Nebraska Right to Life endorsement at every chance even though by his own admission, his position on abortion and stem-cell research is meaningless. In Nebraska, there are very few elected offices that have any influence on the abortion issue, but pro-choice Democrats running for office have to deal with single-issue voters that won’t vote for any pro-choice candidate.
Isn’t it ironic that Randy Ferlic, a Republican, has to deal with this situation? How does he deal with it? He cries foul saying that he doesn’t have any control over the issue. I don’t think he was crying foul when single-issue pro-life voters voted for him. My, how the tables have turned.

single-issue war voters voted against him for a certifiable kook.
Be great if Democrats turned against Ben Nelson the same way…..he’s in the wrong party to begin with.
This flip flop in philosophy comes as no surprise to me we are taking about republicans after all. They have made making campaigns about non issues items into an art form but now Americans are waking up.
They are demanding that candidates talk about issues that matter to them and yes some are even giving republicans a tatse of their own twisted message. You know what they say what’s good for the goose…..
I love that karma is quite the bitch. However, I disagree with your statement, Robin that you can make a generalized statement about republicans and say that it is no surprise. This is a characteristic trait of all politically uneducated, republican and democrat alike. Example: This morning I heard democrats on the shuttle bus on the way from crossroads to the university state that they wouldn’t vote for Jim Esch stictly because he’s a pro-life dem. Preach educating yourself in politics, not juding by party lines.
Politically uneducated hardly darling! Maybe I didn’t articulate myself properly I was speaking in generalities. All you have to do is turn on talk radio or watch the Sunday political pundits.
The Republicans have made an art of winning elections by making issues out of things that should be non issues. As for Jim Esch. I think he is an excellent candidate and a great man of integrity. I am a team captain for Esch and have personally went out Canvassing for him.
So I don’t base my decision on whether to support or not support a candidate based on one singular issue!
I agree that Esch is a great man. I wasn’t saying you were politically uneducated, but rather that saying you should vote one way or another based strictly on party lines or non-issues is a trait of the politically uneducated, republican and democrat alike.

No harm no Foul. We all get a little weird this close to election day. Hey is any of you out their love to blog, please consider going to Daily kos or kicking ass any political blog and talk up Jim. Also ask people to make an invasion to husker land to help out the campaign or donate and please make a big point about Jim not taking ANY PAC money!
I’ve been trying, Robin. I’ll keep pushing a few diaries about Jim, though. Sometimes it’s hit or miss on getting people to read it.
