Nice Shot, Dick

This past weekend, our Vice President Dick Cheney shot his friend, Texas Attorney Harry Whittington, while the two were hunting in southern Texas. Regardless of your stance on gun control, this raises some serious questions. I’ve talked to many hunters and they all assure me, hunting is extremely safe unless one of two qualities exists in the hunter: carelessness or stupidity.

So, I raise the question:

Is Dick Cheney careless or is Dick Cheney stupid?

I would prefer the former but the latter may be the case. Either way, it appears that Dick Cheney has again fired before aiming, pulled the trigger without thinking. This time may hit closer to home, though, as the person on the receiving end of his incompetence was an American citizen. Stupid or careless, if Dick Cheney cannot distinguish between a bird and a grown man, how can we count on him to make rational decisions in Washington? I guess most of us don’t.

Dick Cheney, gangster — shot the man in the grill. I wonder if the V.P. held the shotgun sideways when he let fly.

Seriously, as we all know by now, the real story here is the delay in disclosing this accident. We now know that the shooting occured at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. This is the end of the hunting day, not the beginning. My theory: Dick was probably over the legal limit for alcohol and they had to wait for his BAC to decline. Not saying he was wasted, just that, by 5:30 p.m., the cockatil hour in Texas was well under way. Don’t forget that Cheney has acknowledged two past DUIs during his “youthful indiscretion” days. No doubt that somebody was passing around a thermos of bourbon, or martinis.

None of the admin.’s offered excuses for the delay add up.

I’m glad the victim did not die, and hope that he fully recovers.

I also want to know who else was in the hunting party. Why won’t the White House disclose this information?

I don’t know if he’s careless or stupid, but I do know he’s just plain mean. Trying to blame his friend/victim for this screw-up is about as low as one can get.

  3. 3 Steven Feb 14th, 2006 at 11:46 pm

If you know hunting and you know the story at all you would all know that the “victim” did not follow proper hunting procedure and make his presence known. With that said it was very easy to understand why the guy got shot. The birds flushed and the VP shot simply that easy.

Even I think the media is kind of blowing things out of proportion. It was a hunting accident, nothing that he did purposefully. As for the delay in getting the news to the American people, I say “so what?” Does it really affect our lives enough to get all bent out of shape about it? I say get over it and let the guy who was shot have his privacy.

  5. 5 Abbey Feb 15th, 2006 at 10:30 am

Exactly. I think there are more important stories, even if it is midly amusing.

  6. 6 John G. Feb 15th, 2006 at 12:21 pm

The media is yet again not asking the right questions. The delay is important but I do not think this should be treated like some innocent accident. Our vice-president shot a man. The media should approach the situation without the assumption this is innocent accident. They should be asking things like “Was he drunk” and “Why has he not given a public statement about incident?” If him and the White House would have been immediately forthcoming and not acting so secretively this never would have blown up to the story it has become.

  7. 7 John Feb 15th, 2006 at 1:10 pm

I have gone hunting sense I was six and I never shot no man. I cant beleeve you liberals are always trying to take my gun away. Stuff like this happens but all you gay pansy liberals dont have no better solution to this. So Dick shot a man. He dont die. Get over it. Republicans for ever.

Surely Dick Cheney knows by now that his life as a public figure subjects him to higher transparency in all facets of his life-including his hunting habits. This is one of the fundamental principles of public service…and to some extent your life is no longer your own. The people always expect an explanation…afterall we want accountability! And the handling of this incident is just more fuel into the recurring theme in the Bush administration of denial of fallibility. I can’t even believe I am equating a hunting accident to political leadership, but Cheney’s arrogance is absolutely shameful.

P.S. did anyone catch Letterman’s Cheney bit last night?

  9. 9 Sarge Feb 15th, 2006 at 4:06 pm

First, about me. I’m an owner of a registered handgun and several rifles and shotguns and an avid hunter. I’m a little discouraged by the apparent lack of safety knowledge by the V.P. and his compatriot. I thought one of the main components of the NRA, which vehemently supported Bush/Cheney 04 was gun safety. I thought that was what made the NRA tolerable. Now I see one of the NRA’s chosen ones shoot his friend in the neck and face, did Cheney take the safety lesson’s? I doubt it. All I have to say is not only does Cheney and his friend look stupid, but so do fanatic gun supporters. Lets use our heads, folks. Imagine a AR-15 in the hand of Cheney instead of a shotgun filled with birdshot. (Mind you, I know you don’t hunt fowl with an automatic rifle but think about it.) We would be burying a man. Never mind how much this would be investigated if the man would have died… maybe we never would have heard about it. I don’t know, all I do know is that guns aren’t toys, they are tools. Yes, hunting is fun but it is important to be responsible and to respect your weapon. People who don’t respect guns, who don’t show a working knowledge of the weapon, and who act like idiots with a weapon in their hand should have the weapon taken away. Owning a weapon may be a right but with it comes great responsibility. Remember that next time, Cowboys.

Ok I am sorry I am going a little off topic, but that comment almost takes the cake as the worst yet. Here is some advice John…

    1) Take a few english classes, they may help with the speech impediment.

    2) Its called spell check, or maybe you should get your vocabulary book out from 2nd grade and find out how to spell those difficult words like “since” and “believe”

    3) Please think your comments through next time, then maybe someone will take you seriously

    Thank you for your time.

I think the hunting accident is absolutely none of our concern. Things like this happen sometimes. Yes, there might have been a few hunting safety concerns, but so what? Everyone makes a really dumbass mistake once in awhile. Leave the man alone. His hunting accident is none of our concern, nor does it affect us in any way.

  12. 12 Mike M Feb 16th, 2006 at 12:36 pm

    Agreed Bill

This is surely an interesting story, but it’s one that just doesn’t follow with much discussion. He shot a friend, and thats it. I don’t understand why the press is milking it for all its worth. Seriously, if you shot your friend by accident, would your first thought be, “damn, I need to call my press secretary ASAP and schedule a press conference!!!” This story is good for a day or two of mention in a newspaper, but then we should be back to regular stuff. The media outburst is an example of the hatred the press has for this administration.

    Hilarious
Hope he isn’t left with any enduring damage
but for the sake of comedy….Hilarious

Letterman’s Top 10 list tonight had a likely explanation if Cheney shot his lawyer friend on purpose: the Vice President was just attempting to make Bush look smarter by comparison.

  16. 16 Cody Feb 21st, 2006 at 12:56 am

Should this story have taken the life of its own that it has? Probably not. Is it worthy of air time. ABSOLUTLEY! If something were to happen to Bush, Dick Cheney would be our President, and as such, anytime that he is involved in any form of accident (in this case shooting his friend in the face) it is the public’s right to know. Once you become the VP you no longer become the ‘average’ citizen who can get away with such mishaps. We have always, and always will, hold our leaders to a higher standard (or at least I hope we do). The question I would like to pose is the following: The country is in a controversial war, New Orleans is still a disaster area, leaders in Congress have been indicted, the government is spying on American citizens, so why the heck is the Vice President on a hunting trip?! It just seems to me that actually fulfilling his duty to this country would be more important than a day-long trip with some of his rich buddies.

  17. 17 Tommy Feb 21st, 2006 at 12:50 pm

Thats the stupidest thing I have ever read Cody. You are awarded no points and we are all dumber for having read your comment.

Please consider thinking before posting something next time.

Dick Cheney is a great American and you are nothing more than a panzy sissy liberal who wants to turn America into Doghumpinghomosexualabortionlovingland and we are all stupider for having you as a fellow American. I am ashamed.

  18. 18 Sarge Feb 21st, 2006 at 2:25 pm

Tommy? Did you really say that? Did you really say “please consider thinking before posting” and then follow it up with “doghumpinghomosexualabortionlovingland?” Tommy, if you would have thought it through you would have realized several things.
    1. Dogs humping things are not necessarily gay. They just hump everything because of instincts. However, even if my dog was gay I would still love him.
    2. Conversely, I’ve met several homosexuals in my life, none of them ever had an attraction to dogs. I think you’re missing something Tommy.
    3. Moreover, homosexuals don’t often have abortions, I’ll let you work that one out in your head.
    4. I do agree we should turn America into a “loving land.” Way to Contribute something, Tommy.
Oh, yes, and Tommy… It’s kinda easy to act tough over the internet isn’t it. I’m sure your outspokenness is simply the pre-game to your outspokenness in the world. Can’t wait to meet you face to face.

I’m honestly not sure if that’s a parody post, or if it’s actually serious.

  20. 20 Tim Mar 10th, 2006 at 12:36 pm

I’m still waiting for an explanation why it took Senator Kennedy (D-MA), 12+ hours to report the incident at “Chappaquidick” several years ago.

If I remember right, someone actually died in that one.

  21. 21 Dave Sund Apr 5th, 2006 at 1:24 pm

This seems like as good a place as any to note that Heineman signed the concealed weapons bill into law today.

I saw that you have a page that discusses patent-related resources at http://www.unodemocrats.com/blog/. I wanted to suggest adding www.freepatentsonline.com to the page. This web site has free PDF downloading (instead of having to page through TIFFs like at the US PTO). It is by far the best free patent searching site.

“Education, if you make the most of it … you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”

Nice shot, John Kerry, at the best and brightest in our great country. Two of which are my sons. Both of which would run circles around this despicable blithering idiot. No coincidence that the military had an unprecedented get out the vote in the last Presidential election….who would want to serve for this arrogant “patriot”?

You all must be real proud to be Democrats today….with this classless clown as your last Presidential candidate. The intoxicated Ted Kennedy, the incoherent Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, Al Sharpton, Tom Harkin, Bill and Hillary Clischnev, and last but certainly not least, John Kerry the true voices of your party.

Waiting with bated breath at how the Terrorist News Network, CNN/Al-Queda-USA will try to spin this inexcusable comment.

John, I think this is this funniest comment alive.

I read this blog and was kind of chuckling at all the dick innuendos…

    and then i saw that.

That is every stereotype of a republican. And I’m very sorry that people misconstrued that as an actual comment.

While the actual incident happened a long time ago, I was confused as to why the media were only covering the ACCIDENTAL shooting from the white house’s perspective. I want to know exactly what Dick’s poor friend thought.

Dick Cheney probably found out his friend was in the Gay Parade.
