The Nebraska Young Democrats (NYD) is the official youth caucus of the Nebraska Democratic Party, representing the ages of 13-38. NYD is a chartered member of the Young Democrats of America. The group has members at almost every college and university, and many high schools across the state. We are working to bring young people into the democratic process and building a community of young people who give a damn.
The UNO College Democrats have been an amazing chapter in the past year. You all have done an absolutely tremendous job at developing a strong chapter, and are the example we use to give other chapters ideas on what they can do to develop. One of these ideas, a protest of President Bush’s visit to Omaha, was the recipient of the award for Best Local or State Event at the YDA National Convention in August of 2005. The success the UNO College Democrats have had over the past year helps all of us feel optimistic in this “red” state.
2006 will be a watershed year in Nebraska politics, and I believe that NYD is in a wonderful position to be the grassroots force behind the many Democratic successes we will have next year. In order to accomplish that goal we will be spending a great deal of time helping to strengthen our chapters in order to develop a large team of campaign staffers and volunteers. With the strong team we will have developed we will be able to target 3 races with young candidates, using our grassroots power to help them win. I hope I will see and get to know all of you in the next year, as we work towards Democratic victories across the state in 2006.
