Does it scare anyone else that the country is allowing George W. Bush to have 2/9 influence over our Supreme Court? It bothers me. It keeps me awake at night. The Dems let him have John Roberts who feigns a moderate political stance. No one really knows what Roberts’ positions are, but his wife is a former member of Feminists for Life, a pro-life, non-partisan group. While her views are not necessarily indicative of her husband’s, it may not be unreasonable to assume that they agree on an issue as controversial as abortion.
The nomination of Harriet Miers was a calamity for Bush. BOTH parties criticized this novel selection. Lack of experience, lack of Constitutional knowledge, and noticeable lack of desire to even serve on the Supreme Court plagued the Miers nomination. Miers decided to withdraw herself from consideration. And it was back to the drawing board (with his red crayons, literally) for Bush.
Ah, Alito or should I say “Scalito.” Senator Nelson endorses him. But Alito is hardly the magic moderate that will suffice the desires of both ends of the spectrum. But Bush has to feed and diaper his conservative base. Enter Alito, the judge who liberal groups accuse of threatening privacy and abortion rights and who Bush chose to band-aid his relationship with his extreme right-wing political base.
I think President Bush is way over his head in the selection of Supreme Court judges. With all due respect, the task of selecting a Supreme Court Justice is a very taxing job worthy of much insightful decision-making. And his track record of appointments speaks for itself, i.e. Michael Brown, John Bolton. President Bush himself has no legal experience and his strict constructionist judicial philosophy makes me wonder if he even understands the Supreme Court’s role. Its unfortunate Bush is allowed such influence over the nation’s highest court.
Unfortunately, it appears the Democrats couldn’t hold together a filibuster on Alito, and he will be confirmed tomorrow.
