Why is Steve Massara running for Student President/Regent at UNO?

Steve Massara is running for Student President/Regent at UNO. On January 23, 2005, Massara sent an email to his Pike fraternity brothers to explain the organizations and activities he is involved with on campus.

This is a direct quote from his email:

Student Government- A group of individuals who represent the student body. This is a very powerful and influential resume builder. Pikes must dominate and control this organization in order to further our dominance on campus.

Is Steve Massara running for president to pad his resume? Does Massara care about students on campus that don’t belong to a Greek organization? Why must Pikes “dominate” the Student Governement at UNO? What other things is Massara saying behind closed doors that we don’t know about?

Is this the type of person we want representing the student body?

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? People, if this is true, I’m OUTRAGED!?! I’m sure that you wouldn’t make this up…but I can’t believe a person would be so blatant with his true goals but I’m glad he is.

This person’s attitude is dangerous for our school.

I’m voting, and I’m voting for whomever is running against this guy!

I think it is very beneficial to look into the reasons why a candidate (any candidate) is seeking office. This being said, why is a student who has never been in Student Government or active on campus running for Regent? I do NOT want a Regent who thinks that this position can be fullfilled by “hitting the ground running.” Steve is the ONLY qualified candidate. Lets look at everyone who is running, lets be intelligent, lets not run this University into the ground. Where I come from, slander is a serious, serious offense. GOOD LUCK STEVE!

Quit badgering society with your $5 conspiracy theories.

    Go STEVE!
GREAT Qualifications, GREAT Person, GREAT PRESIDENT!
Vote for someone who is actually a member of UNO Organizations and involved within the community, in addition to being a student. STEVE MASSARA has the qualifications of an excellent well-rounded representative of UNO students.

  5. 5 Go Jessie Sep 30th, 2005 at 11:59 am

Being a student is the only qualification a person needs be president.

A person that is heavily involved in student government, the greek system, etc. has a grossly obscured view of the campus. Jessie Collins is like 95% of the students on campus. Why shouldn’t we elect an average student to represent the average student. Plus, most of the previous student presidents have a smiliar background as Mr. Massara and where have they gotten us?

Katie, thank you for your two cents. Mr. Massara has said that he will be “hitting the ground running” if he is elected so I’m not sure what your point is there. So, you’re saying that if Mr. Collins is elected that he will run the university into the ground? Are you saying that the post made by chief is slanderous? I think you have a very broad interpretation of slander. (oh, and by the way it wouldn’t be slander, it would be libel). By your broad definition of “slander,” you would be guilty of that by saying that Mr. Collins would “run this University into the ground.”

I THINK THAT ANY CANDIADATE IS BETTER THAN ELIZABETH KRAMER! WE NEED TO REPRESENT THE STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERISTY OF NEBRASKA AT OMAHA! ALL OF THEM!

  7. 7 Anne Sep 30th, 2005 at 12:20 pm

I think it’s great that people are passionate about this election. However, it seems that people are not talking about what candidates stand for. Who cares if you are in a frat or not? All students should care about is what some one will do for the Univeristy. People need to stop attacking each other and actually discuss issues!

  8. 8 The Don Sep 30th, 2005 at 1:12 pm

The election isn’t about equality in canidacy, it is about the canidate who will do a better job. Not many people understand the responsibilities of the Student Pres/ Regent in its totality. Jessie Collins is of solid character, unfortunatly he has a lack of understanding for the position and its responisibilites. (the previous comment is from my own interpretation of Jessie from the debate). When this happends the canidate makes promises or addresses issues in which are misleading by pure lack of knowledge (lack of knowledge meaning information about current matters or events, by-law power, lack of knowledge of the due process, lack of networking with regents). If there is another debate I would make a strong recommendation to Jessie to educate himself more on the position and to develop some valid goals to discuss and some issues which are within student governments power to resolve.

  9. 9 A rational voice Sep 30th, 2005 at 3:12 pm

I agree with Anne. Let’s talk about the actual issues. If anyone was at the presidential debate, they would know that Mr. Collins lacks understanding of not only the position of UNO Student Body President/Regent, but also his own platforms. During the debate he posed no real concerns or ambitions for his ticket. Collins and Malek said their primary goal is improving student communication and invovlement on campus. That is great, but it is a fairly ambiguous stance to take. Every campus in America is overpopulated with students who are “out of touch” with their University. Let’s not assume that because a candidate can complain he or she is qualified for the position. Leadership stems from setting examples and earning respect. In addition to making a broad statement with no real clout, the ticket offered no suggestions for improvement.

For all those people not at the debate, I have provided a few bullet points that were key to the Collins/Malek performance:
*The canidates showed up 20 minutes late
*The candidates stated they had no previous experience with Student Government or ANY other campus organization.
*After admitting their own apathy, the candidates proceeded to explain that they have seen the light and are now ready to take the most influential position on campus without ever previously dedicating an ounce of time or effort to the University.
This is election is ridiculous. Steve Massara is by far the better candidate. It would be an atrocity for any student to vote for a ticket with absolutely zero experience and no real direction. I encourage everyone reading this post to look at this election from a rational standpoint. Vote for the individual who is superior in experience and overall dedication to the University, Steve Massara.

In response to Jessie’s post: I think your rational is wonderful. Let’s start having average people do all of the leadership in the world. After all, leaders are suppose to be clones of the status quo. Using that rational, the next United States President should be an “average Joe” from the streets. Top recruits for CEO positions should come from those individuals performing the manual labor, and NASA should give top priority to engineers with C averages in school. Just a thought about your theory that being average makes Collins a better candidate. In my mind, I would rather vote for the extraordinary candidate, rather than ordinary.

I have some breaking news you all must read about! Seriously, this is a very grave matter and must be handled with all gravity. I am worried about Steve Massara being elected as President Regent because I have recently found out he is stockpiling Nuclear Weapons in the Student Government Office and plans to blow up the BP gas station at 120th and Dodge unless the Douglas County humane society releases all the wombats immediately! I am very concerned about this because I think that while Steve’s concern for wombats is noble, it may not reflect the sentiment of the majority of students at UNO. It is currently rumored that Steve has 3 trident class nuclear ICBMs in his office at this very moment. How he got them in the building is still unknown. It is also a mystery as to how he got all 3 of them to fit in that tiny office. What is clear is that clearly he is a very “dangerous” threat to national security and must be stopped. Now, lets talk about crutons. I like crutons, they make a great addition to a salad. I also like a liberal amount of ranch dressing on my salads. Crutons can also make heathly snacks that are great inbetween meals. I think both Steve and Jesse both like crutons and in my opinion, that makes them both very qualified for the office of President Regent. So, in the end, its all about crutons or any other food, condiment, candy, or pastry that suits you. Vote your stomach, I vote mine and it has never let me down.

So, does anyone know if Mr. Massara sent out that email?

  12. 12 dave Sep 30th, 2005 at 5:11 pm

Steve Massara would have to murder a toddler for him not to be the best candidate. Jesse Collins put the final nail in his coffin by showing up late to the debate. Is this really the guy you want representing UNO by showing up late to Regents meetings?

On a related note, I’ve never fired or owned a gun in my life, but I’m going to announce here, that I am running to become head of the NRA!

  13. 13 Gary DiSilvestro Sep 30th, 2005 at 6:00 pm

Anyone who knows anything about the Regent Hergert situation would conclude a wimp who won’t stand up to Hergert is the last thing UNO needs again as a student regent. When student government insiders defend Massara they betray the resume-primping nature of what the leadership of that body currently represents. Any student with a shred of dignity would vote for change. I attended UNO, was a student senate speaker and editor of the Gateway. I can tell you in all honesty from speaking with current students at UNL, UNO and Kearney, the current leadership of UNO Student Government is the laughingstock of the entire university system. Reading the comments of Massara, the lame attacks his friends launch on Jesse Collins, and the indignation and sense of entitlement from Massara’s elitiist friends is all the proof anyone needs that if Massara wins it will be a shame.

  14. 14 Mike M Oct 1st, 2005 at 10:41 am

what was the name of the candidate who came to speak at our meeting? Shows you how much I was paying attention….

  15. 15 Abbey Oct 1st, 2005 at 11:19 am

    That would be Jesse Collins.

  16. 16 dave Oct 1st, 2005 at 9:22 pm

Did Jesse Collins decide to actually come on time to your meeting?

  17. 17 Lee Clausen Oct 1st, 2005 at 10:45 pm

Jesse Collins did arrive in advance for the meeting, was well spoken and articulate, and made a throrough case for his candidacy for Student President/Regent. Does anyone know if Massara is planning on speaking to the group?

  18. 18 Tyler Oct 3rd, 2005 at 5:34 pm

I wonder if all of these different Massara apologetics have the same IP address? Just curious….

  19. 19 John Schneider Oct 5th, 2005 at 10:10 am

Steve is an excellant candidate. TO anyone that is bashing him, you have no clue as to how well informed Steve is in regards to campus matters. He is a man of integrity and a man who will do what it takes to put this University first!

  20. 20 The man Oct 9th, 2005 at 10:55 pm

Well, why does anyone run for these postitions. Of course this helps on a resume as well as prestige and helps pay for their education. But, anyone that ever runs for this postion wants it for a resume builder and prestige, so it does not matter at all who wins.

That’s another thing, does it really matter who wins this election? NO. Nothing changes year to year, just a new name. Student Government does not do anything important and has no power over the university, they are just there as pawns of the adminstration to say they give the students voice in how the university to shape it’s policies.

And the email thing, if he wrote it so what? Every group tries to be the best there is, it is the nature of competition. Doesn’t the democratic party want total domination of the government so it can set its own policies and disregard others? Of course, same goes with the Republicans, which is happening this very second. So it makes that in happens in micro governments as well.

So, the question I pose is, who cares?
