How many dems here are actually gonna vote for Ben Nelson? I am conflicted whether or not to support a democrat that votes to confirm Janice Rogers Brown. I would sooner vote for republicans such as Lincoln Chafee or Olympia Snowe before voting for Ben Nelson. I mean, he voted for the Bush tax cuts, he voted for the Bankrupty bill, he voted to give the president the authority to invade Iraq, he voted for Janice Rogers Brown and William Pryor, and he supports a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

With all that being said, I will never vote for any of the republicans in Nebraska. So where is a true blue liberal democrat like me supposed to go? Perhaps green party canidate?

One can take an single issue and run with it. Not every senator is going to vote 100% in someone's liking. Ben Nelson to me is a man of integrity. Something you do not seem to find much in politics and certainly Washington.

You look for a liberal democrat. I prefer a moderate/centrist one.

I agree that no canidate is going to vote 100% the way someone would like. Nor should anyone say that they are 100% for a politician. However, in Nelson's case, he votes with the democrats about 50% of the time. I have serious philosophical disagreements with the beliefs of Ben Nelson on important issues such as Reproductive Choice, Foreign Policy, Enviromental Policy, Trade, Civil Rights/Civil Liberties, tax policy ect.

I must say that it is better to have Ben Nelson who votes correctly 50% of the time rather than some extreme right-wing republican who will not oppose the president on a single issue.

Also, I do agree that Ben Nelson and Chuck Hagel are men of courage and integrity.

Fair enough. And while you look for a better candidate, I will continue to support him.

Another good reason for a 'true blue liberal democrat' to vote for someone who you may not always agree with is because it keeps another Democrat in the Senate. The more Democrats we have, regardless of their individual stance on certain issues, the less power the Repubs will have. The party in control of the Senate is so much more important than the beliefs of the individual Senators--even if we're not able to take back the Senate in 2006, the closer the balance, the better.

That is a real selfish mindset. Vote party lines, just so someone else can suffer. The same thing has been said of Republicans. We do not want to start going that line. We want good people in office. Not just a rubber stamp for someone else's views. Isn't that what the so called leadership ellite want, Dems or Repub - so they can stay in control of their power, no matter who is in charge of what. Congress, or committee, or President or whatever.

It is a dangerous road you travel to go blindly into that night.

Hey guys I stumbled upon your site while looking up contested 2006 senate races. I am the President of the College Democrats at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Out here many of us Dems just assume many hard core red state Dems are Republican-lite sometimes, like Ben Nelson.

It's refreshing to see other young students inyour area concerned about the same issues and sharing our views on them! This gives me hope that one day even Nebraska will produce Senators like California's Barbara Boxer....good luck in your campaigning!
