Im sad, I am at school and I can't check out the video, I can't wait until I get home so I can watch it. Hey has anyone done any investigation into whether or not Jim Vokal is gay? Maybe next we will catch him in a scandal at lake cunningham.

14,000 is every voter in his district.
I know tons of people who have recieved the fliers. Considering there are what, 150 words o text on them? And the line in question is in bold with a bullet point, that's hardly a mistake. I have spent time with candidates agonizing over the placement of a comma (if we put it this way it's gramatically correct but slightly more confusing, if we don't put it in then english teachers won't vote for us, oh wait, english teachers all vote for dems anyway, etc)

he's telling me he just "overlooked" those fee increases?

yeah 14,000 is an understatement. And "mistake" is a lie.

What will we ever do without Vokal and Thompson and Siegerson? Oh wait, get things done.

Amanda: Vokal wasn't even in the closet until after getting elected. Anybody who has frequented the Joy knows this. I've been a fag hag x many years. The fact that he's gay doesn't bother me. It's simply that he paints himself as a conservative, takes conservative dollars to run, and when he had the chance to do something right (vote to extend benefits to same sex partners in the OPD contract, he turns his back on a lifestyle that he lived until the election.) The guy is a scandal waitin' to happen.

I am a friend of Jim's and a volunteer for his campaign. I appreciate that the UNO Demcrats blog allows for feedback from all who visit - not just those of the same party or ideology. I generally enjoy reading the comments posted here as they seldom amount to much more than the usual partisan talking points. I have not been remotely inclined to participate, but the recent libelous post by Diane Hayes begs a response.

Diane was/is a staunch supporter of Bob Sivick, who lost in a landslide four years ago to Jim Vokal. That she has not accepted that defeat is perhaps understandable, but that she has done nothing but personally attack Jim in the time since shows an extreme lack of maturity and personal character.

If Ms. Hayes has evidence that Jim's sexual preference is anything other than he claims, perhaps she should come forward with it so that we may judge for ourselves. Unfounded rumors and innuendoes do not suffice. I am personally aware of previous warnings Ms. Hayes has received from local authorities to cease her harassment of the Vokal Family. If she continues down the path of falsehoods and libel, those warnings will likely turn into action.

Though we are on opposite sides of the political spectrum, I applaud the efforts of the UNO Democrats to become intensely involved in the political process. Thank you for the opportunity to respond to these ridiculous comments that really have no place in the upcoming election.

Please, Jordan. It's common knowledge that Jim had several boyfriends, and a long term gay relationship. Vokal is queer as a three dollar bill. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Jordan, I don't think you should be asking anyone to prove Jim's gay or straight, because there are plenty of guys who've slept with him. His wife should be worried about getting HIV, as those "straight" guys are the ones who are most likely to infect their innocent wives.

You call it character assignation, I call it more right wing hypocrisy.

Feel free to spew any of those partisan talking points from the other side right back at us. I for one usually think that we have pretty wide variety of opinions, and well thought-out policy and political advice on this site. And then the other half is mostly us ranting, being upset, yelling at each other, or being insanly witty. But I always like to hear other opinions.

Vokal's sexual-orientation doesn't matter beyond the blatent hypocricy. But who really cares right? He's done enough other things to deserve to lose his job that I don't think that one really needs to come up much.

I agree with mike, we don't need to be attack dogs but guard dogs...if you get my drift.

Also, i am very happy that this website allows everybody to voice their opinion. Really, how lame would blogging be if we just patted each other on the ass all the time?

Brian,

I'm a little dissapointed that you think that way because your statement is a lie. To prove that it is a lie, I would like to invite to walk door-to-door with our members this Saturday, April 2nd. Your email address says that your a democrat so we would love it if you joined us on Saturday and prove you wrong.

Send me an email at unodemocrats@yahoo.com and tell me which candidate you would like to walk for. I will respond and tell how you can walk for that candidate and what members of the College Democrats are walking for that candidate.

If you don't take the College Democrats up on this offer, I would assume that you are just lazy person with nothing to do but surf the internet.

I hope to hear from you soon.

If we were all lazy kids with nothing to do but surf the web, you'd expect our site's number of visitors to spike dramatically over the weekend (when we have all that lazy free time).

The reverse happens though. Saturday and then Sunday are our lowest visitor days every single week.

Could this be because on the weekend we are too busy going door to door and hitting the ground for the candidates we care about- that we just use the blog to keep up to date and relax a bit during our hectic school weeks?

I too hope you come walk with us this weekend. I suggest walking for Boyle, Kraft, or Herd with the IAFF. But perhaps Gernandt, Fahey, or Suttle are more up your alley?

See you saturday
your friend

Jordan: I have NEVER received any "warnings" from local authorities regarding harrassment of Vokal either in writing or verbally. In fact, I've got to admit that the story I tell makes great conservation at parties. I am a freelance writer who makes fun of local politicians both dems and republicans. Regarding any libelous lawsuits that Vokal would wish to make, I'm INVITING him to do so...as truth is the best defense for libel and slander. As your own leader would suggest, BRING EM ON. Vokal lived a gay life up until running for office and this is well known amongst gays and straights alike. If he didn't want to come out of the closet, he shouldn't have been hanging at the Joy during the campaign. Want to discuss this further? email me at dhmagician@cox.net or have your attorney contact me. I'm eager to discuss this issue.

to Mike and Daniel: This absolutely IS an issue in this campaign. Vokal's entire life has been a dichotomy. He takes conservative dollars, runs as a conservative but otherwise has lived a liberal, alternative lifestyle. I don't care how open minded you are... closet gays should NOT run for office in conservative strongholds such as the midwest - such officials are ripe for blackmail. By the way the syrupy 2 page letter from Liz had us rolling in the aisles laughing. Can we also expect a letter from his gay lover(s) extolling his virtues?

For anyone interested: After seeing Jordan's threat of a libel lawsuit on this site, I couldn't let it go without responding, especially in light of other attempts by this candidate to subdue free speech. I sent the following email to Vokal last night and will happily post any response I receive.

Jim: Your friend Jordan threatened me with a libel lawsuit on the Young Democrats website. Want to elevate this issue? I'd be delighted. Seems that the topic of free speech is a "hot button" with you and your campaign workers.

By the way, I am STILL waiting for the police report from October 31, 2001, when Omaha police detective Steve Henthorn questioned me regarding some "harrassment" you were experiencing and then assured me that a police report would be forthcoming. As my elected official, perhaps you can speed that up.

Also, please let Jordan know that my experience with the police has been limited to a very misguided Mr. Henthorn that morning. Also advise Jordan that at no point have I been "warned" by authorities and otherwise my experience with the law has been limited to a few minor traffic tickets.

On a side note, as a political satirist, I want to thank you for providing the extensive fodder over the past few years. You've been a genuine delight.

I sent the following email to Vokal last night and will happily post any response I receive.

Jim: Your friend Jordan threatened me with a libel lawsuit on the Young Democrats website. Want to elevate this issue? I’d be delighted. Seems that the topic of free speech is a “hot button” with you and your campaign workers.

By the way, I am STILL waiting for the police report from October 31, 2001, when Omaha police detective Steve Henthorn questioned me regarding some “harrassment” you were experiencing and then assured me that a police report would be forthcoming. As my elected official, perhaps you can speed that up.

Also, please let Jordan know that my experience with the police has been limited to a very misguided Mr. Henthorn that morning. Also advise Jordan that at no point have I been “warned” by authorities and otherwise my experience with the law has been limited to a few minor traffic tickets.

On a side note, as a political satirist, I want to thank you for providing the extensive fodder over the past few years. You’ve been a genuine delight.

Ms. Hayes - your words and actions here speak louder about your credibility and character than I ever could. I am sure all three of your loyal readers are enjoying your latest attempts at "political satire". Your work must be confused with that of P.J. O'Rourke and Mort Sahl all the time!

I do appreicate your ability to not be weighed down by petty nuisances like "facts" or "eviddence" and I encourage you to keep up the good work. The tactics being utilized by the likes of you, Anne Boyle, and the Democrat Party are creating an overwhleming response from District 3 voters. At least you shouldn't fret about losing your muse - Jim will contine to be a "genuine delight" for you over the next four years.

Brian,

How could I email you?

The email address you use to post doesn't exist. Actually, that email account according to yahoo was "disabled or discontinued." Take a look at a comment above when I invited you to walk on Saturday.

The comment is under my screen name.

Jordan: Thanks for responding and for your comment regarding credibility and character. Your name sounded familiar to me so I did some checking. I found an article from the OWH dated 5/12/01 "Vokal Attack Backfires; Quotes Were Fabricated," where you and Jim were caught fabricating statements from individuals you claimed were endorsing Vokal. When a saavy OWH reporter called the individuals they denied making such endorsements. If I recall, you wound up with quite a bit of egg on your face over that one. And of course Vokal claimed his typical ignorance of the facts. As per OWH, "Even though the statement was faxed from his office at Omaha State Bank, Vokal said he did not see it before it went out. Vokal said his campaign manager, Jordan McGrain wrote it and faxed it to the news media." By the way, Jordan, I'm still waiting for that official comment to my email from Vokal and/or contact from your attorney.

Ms. Hayes - Thanks for mentioning that press release from four years ago. Yes - I did end up with quite a bit of egg on my face for that incident. But it's amazing what winning an election by 14 points can do for your reputation and self-image. I know - you'll have to take my word for it.

And while we're on the subject, let's address the so-called "savvy reporting" by one Judith Nygren of the OWH. She never spoke with Mr. Tom Lewis, then president of the Morton Meadows Neighborhood Association, one of the two men quoted in our release. Had she bothered to catch up with him, she would have learned that he was quoted accurately and supported our position. Of course, those facts would have ruined her story! She had already spoken with Joe Mangiamelli who did not deny the quote, as he would tell us later, only denied giving us permission to use it. That is a far cry from fabrication, but whatever.

I also find it funny that you, unlike most rational people, do not consider a visit from a police detective a "warning", especially when that visit is accompanied by a trip down to the station to be fingerprinted. Oh, and after this non-warning you received, the harassement Jim and his family experienced came to an abrupt end. Yeah, probably a coincidence.

Ms. Hayes, I've sooo enjoyed our chats, but I'm afraid that your uncovering of my scandalous past has shamed me beyond compare. My reputation is certainly ruined among the UNO Democrat crowd - I know these youngsters believe EVERYTHING they read in the OWH. Dejected, I must retreat to my dank and villanous lair where I'll spend the coming days and weeks winning ANOTHER election.

I am sorry that you were unarmed in our match of wits, but I'll be sure to stay in touch if I ever feel the need to either donate blood or obliterate someone on this message board.

The bottom line, Jordan, is that Vokal is a hypocrite and is unfit for office and that you ran a dirty campaign four years ago and you're doing it again. This time, however, every time you're pulling something, either Anne or the democrats are holding you responsible. And trust me, I will continue to tell my story of that shakedown in Oct of 2001 until it is investigated to my satisfaction. My only regret is that unlike the fella in Morton Meadows, I waited too long to sue.

J.T.-about your post on April 1st. What are you refering to? A little confused on the insult I think you were suppose to be throwing at me. Since it has been since March 9, that I have written on this article it seems a little weird that 3 weeks later you would comment. And the fact that you commented on something when the direction of the topic had completely shifted from me expressing my belief that Jim Vokal is a homosexual, to people confirming the facts and then two other bloggers arguing over past personal experiences. Did you accidently type my name in or are you a little slow to respond. Please clarify for me as I am confused on your 3 week delay in a response.

As for Jim Vokal and his sexual orientation, and the comment posted somewhere on the blog (I dont know I was just browsing the last comments posted) about him getting upset and contacting the UNO chancellors, libel and slander seem to come with the position of being in a political office. I believed it was quoted above (and talked about today in my class, as my prof. is a 44 year practicing lawyer) that the best protection against a charge of libel is the truth. And that libel and slander are to be expected by politicians when they are in political office, they are suppose to deal with it, as I was told today in my political science class. I see nothing wrong about the disscussion of a politicians lifestyle choice, since in today's world many people base their votes on homosexual issues(even though this is suppose to be a nonpartisan city council race). I don't care that Jim Vokal has made a lifestyle choice, the only thing that I can care about is the fact that he has been in political office as a conservative and I'm sure he is preaching conservative ideals, but yet his lifestyle seems to be a bit on the liberal side. The only thing one can ask when they are electing an official to public office, is that they are honest and fulfill the duties and live up to the moral standards they preach, once they are in office. Now if people feel that Jim Vokal has done that, then they can go to bed at night thinking that they have elected an honest man, and maybe they will sleep better. But I do know that there is a better canidate running for that position, who could better serve our city and live up to the morals she presents. Thanks for your time Im sure this posting will fire a few of you up, but hey that is what blogging is for...Freedom of Speech, may it always prevail.

Actually, in a libel case, the plantiff must prove the defendant was lying and knew about it, not the defendant proving the truth. The burden of truth is placed on the plantiff because they are the ones bringing the case. Come one people, this isn't common law England.

People like to throw around words like libel and slander as a threat without actually knowing what they mean or what a law suit entails. Plus, you can't bring a libel suit unless you are the person that is being defamed. And Jim Vokal is most likely not going to bring a case, especially not because Jordan McGrain told him to do so.

According to several regulars at the Joy, certain city council members, ex-politicians, city insiders, and one young man who is currently dying of aids, Jim Vokal is Gay; not bisexual, just plain Gay. According to my seven-year-old grandson, my french toast always turns out soggy. I'm not sure which of these facts deserves more of my attention. Coupla other facts: Vokal was Hal Daub's protegee, some know why; Daub warned Vokal during the last election to stay away from the Joy; any Gay man wanting to serve in political office in Nebraska had better stay in the closet; to claim that any closeted gay cannot hold public office in Nebraska because he can be blackmailed is just plain dumb and stupid; despite Diane's claims of never having been accused of wrongdoing toward Vokal, she was in fact taken from her home to the police station where she was photographed and fingerprinted. That followed Vokal's yard being strewn with vegetables, and several anonymous emails. Those activities stopped shortly after. The issue is whether Vokal's done a good job. I don't think so. And my french really does turn out soggy.

Julia: I thought we'd talked about this but there are a few issues you've gotten wrong. A policeman showed up at my home on 10/31/03 asking if I had emailed the councilman. I told him yes, that I was inquiring as to drug use after hearing repeated rumors. He asked if that was the limit of my contact and I told him yes, explained that I had no idea where his home was, had not sent him mail, ever phoned him, etc. I then offered to take a polygraph which he declined. He asked if I would give a set of fingerprints and, having nothing to hide, I told him yes and did. HE (Steve Henthorn of the OPD) then told me that Vokal had been getting vegetables on his lawn, had received an obscene (gay) postcard in the mail, and had received unsolicited mailings at city hall. It was a very cordial visit - we both laughed several times regarding the absurdity of the situation - I told him I wanted to clear the situation up, gave fingerprints (no photos) and then advised him that he should begin a search for the real culprit at the Joy Bar (where Vokal was a frequent patron.) There were no threats, no warnings, but a very professional, very misguided and good natured cop who seemingly didn't know where to start an investigation. Having several friends who are cops, attorneys and judges, and having no criminal background whatsoever, I had no reason to decline when he asked for a set of prints. Again, it makes a great story at parties - my big brush with the law.

Well, Diane, that's not what you told me at the time. You DID say the cops were friendly, because of all the people you "know," but you also told me you were taken downtown and photographed and fingerprinted. I don't know. I wasn't there. We agree that Vokal's not done a great job. I'm not convinced he's done any worse job than any other council member;) As for the rest, let's move on.

So can I assume that it was a shakedown on Vokal's part? quite possibly - since he's shown a pattern of abuse while in office. It's an odd coincidence that the visit would come on the day after Vokal suddenly switched his vote on the police auditor and supported the auditor's position (rumor has it after a video of a birthday party surfaced where Vokal was shown displaying affection toward a male.) Were the cops attempting to get even with Vokal for the sudden switch knowing that I have access to a political column? again, who knows. But this kind of thing convinces me further that a closeted gay has no business in politics in a conservative stronghold, (nor any other person with huge skeletons in their closet.) P.S. Anyone thinking I'm less than honest regarding these statements, would I sign my real name and draw attention to it? C'mon.

The only reason I was "taken" downtown is that my car was in the shop that day. That's what you get for driving a British car. :-)

There are "coincidences" and coincidences. And lots of folks sign their names to lots of stuff. Frankly, Diane, it doesn't really matter what happened. I offered you a forum for your ideas. Shortly after, I was diagnosed with stage IIIC ovarian cancer. Now it's IVC. But I'm still kickin it. Figuratively. From bed. Take my word for it: life is short. Move on. The corruption in Omaha politics is matched only by Omahans' apathy. They don't care. In continuing your crusade, you've handed over an enormous amount of your time and energy to folks who don't give a rat's patoot. Live every day for the sake of life itself. Have a ball. For my part, they can kiss my big toe. Gotta jet - lol

Aw Julia...I am so sorry. I'll keep you in my prayers. And you're right on so many levels. We DO get the politics we deserve. No one pays any attention to the issues - especially in this town. It's tough being blue in a red state. And again, fight hard. XX

No one "called" Vokal gay. Your comment implies gay is bad. You also imply that being gay and being married are mutually exclusive states, and further that a "family man" cannot be gay. Vokal has proven his manhood, thereby proving he's straight by fathering children? You gotta get out more.

Joe - I'm saying he's gay. Read my lips: Jim Vokal is gay. He is married and homosexual. And that's part of the reason why it's significant in this campaign...the fact that YOUR party is the force behind the federal ban on gay marriage and Jim is a member of your party and he's gay. Do you understand what the word 'hypocrite' means?

Joe - I don't think homosexuality is shameful. I am not exposing his homosexuality. I am exposing his hypocrisy. And I doubt very much that you know him as well (or in the same light) as my gay friends. And if you truly believe that male homosexuals don't marry females and procreate, then you, my friend, are hopelessly naive.

Joe: maybe you should very pointedly ask him. Look him straight (pun intended) in the eye and ask him. I won't be posting anymore tonight because I'm going to the Max where I will be sitting with Jim Vokal's old friends having a few drinks.

Joe,

Can we be logical for a second?

So you have heard of the former Governor of New Jersey Jim McGreevy? He had a wife and a child. I'm sure there were many people that knew Mr. McGreevy "personally" that thought he was "straight."

Joe please don't go around calling people liars because they have a different view of reality than you do. There are individuals that can corraborate Diane's "accusations." Diane has enough guts to use her full name on these boards. Do you think she would do that if she wasn't 100% sure about what she was saying? If she was lying, there would be a slander and libel suit on her doorstep in a heartbeat.

I trust Diane more than someone with Joe as an alias.

Chris: I am aware of the mess that Jim has created. Sorry, but when gay republicans deny basic human rights to other gays they deserve to be outed. Vokal had a chance to extend benefits to partners of gay police officers and he declined. The fact that homosexuals who marry straights ultimately leave devastation in their wake is all too true.

You are a liar. There is nothing else to say other than your a liar. To accuse some one of that is ballsy I must admit but it aint even true. Keep your presonal attacks to yourself. I know bc he didnt allow some of your gay friends some "basic" human rights. But I mean come on know when to hang it up. This is so outrageous that you would even accuse him of this. And by the way the NJ governor was a democrat. I know Jim and to say that he is gay is like saying Bill Clinton has morals.

If you pathetic little people want to talk about dirty campaiging. I think we should talk about personally attacking the president of the Omaha city council calling a "homo" bc some of your gay buddies dont like him and try and make him look gay to try and ruin his career and his family life. I think that is about as dirty as it comes. I dont know let me know what you think. Or are you going to try and convince me to take some gay guys word over Jims. Hmmmm..... thats a tough one for me.

If you're referring to the fliers that were distributed, think hard. Why were they signed by a fictitious gay/lesbian organization? Who stands to gain from the distribution of the flier?

After all he did vote against them on certain issues. Your not fooling people come on move on to something else that wont be so rediculous to argue.

OK, Joe. We agree it's dirty politics, but try again. Boyle doesn't benefit fom this postcard stunt. At worst, she's thought to be behind it; at best she's thought to be unable to manage her campaign staff. Nope. Vokal gets the sympathy vote, and Boyle gets egg on her face. And she's right. If Vokal wins, it will be due in part to the postcard publicity. So again, who stands to gain? Vokal coordinated the KMTV3 news op. Vokal approved the release of the text of the postcard, knowing that 7, 6 and OWH would refuse to include the card's text. Vokal made sure that a small mailing was broadcast to the entire city. Vokal's wife recorded a phone message that went out to all Vokal's constituents, blaming Boyle for the card. Think hard again.

Bottom line is you are trying to ruin a great man a great husband a great father and a great politician. And you are trying to do that by calling him gay bc you dont like how he voted on some gay and lesbian issues. Very sick and disturbing stuff. I hope you repent and ask for forgiveness from this one. This one takes the cake.

Not accepting? Just look at the things SOME people come on here and say. We don't block them or tell them to shut up....they are aloud to say whatever they want. But we are allowed to argue. DON'T make the mistake of thinking that discussion is somehow not allowed.

Chris - you've got to be kidding... Dems are the party of "acceptance and tolerance" when compared to republicans who support discrimination against gays (i.e. Jim's words on domestic partner benefits.)

The original point of this piece is that if Jim is in fact gay as so many of his acquaintences claim, he's a hypocrite.

Okay kids, this has been fun to watch. First off, I'm a card-carrying member of the Pink Team. I don't think being gay is bad. Some may say so, but that's their biz.

I do want to point out, there's been another outing recently: The utlra-right wing mayor of Spokane was outed this week. He's voted against a ton of stuff that would help us poor lil’ fags.

Anyway, I would encourage anyone who'd like to stop by any one of a multitude of gay chat rooms. There, you'll find all sorts of "not gay" married guys with "beautiful two year old daughters" and "one on the way" who are looking to hook up and get off with another guy.

People, get this straight (no pun intended) sexuality is way too big to fit inside our little heads. There are all sorts of people out there, married or not.

I could have easily been one of those married "not gay" guys, but I chose to be honest with myself and not hurt a good lady.

What I'm getting at is this: Just because someone is married, doesn't mean that they wouldn't step out on their marriage and take it up the ass by a guy. It happens every day. It's happening right now.

Vokal has been VERY clumsy with his liaisons.

This, however, is not so strange. Some people feel the need to create a good thing, then ruin it. Anyone with a psych degree can easily identify this type of behavior. It's a kind of self-destruct behavior, and you'll find it in many people in all different walks of life.

No one can answer the question of the hour "Is Jim Vokal Gay?" except Mr. Vokal himself.

HOWEVER, there are enough people in this very (VERY) small little town who've engaged in gay sex with Mr. Vokal to make one wonder.

No, one doesn’t have to be gay to have gay sex, but it helps.

Ever heard that saying, “He who screams the loudest.” Well, some of these guys who so adamantly defend Vokal…it makes me wonder just how well they know him.

P.S. As for the Democratic Party accepting people: it’s true, we do accept and tolerate. However, I think if Mr. Vokal would be true to himself, he’d find a warmer reception from those of us who’ve lived through hypocrisy and hated it.

By "self-destruct behavior" could you possibly mean, Marcus, outing yourself to a few folks by mail; holding a press-op for folks who didn't get the mailing; having your wife phone any constituents who missed the mailing and the news-op; blaming it on your opponent to get the sympathy vote; setting up a good "out" of a marriage you shouldn't have gotten into in the first place?

I feel bad for you guys I really do. I mean One of Omahas biggest democratic areas is run by a republican and will continue to be run by a republican for four more years. And you know why it will continue to be run by a republican for for more years? Because liberals cant keep there mouth shut. They just cant run a clean campaign. They have to always push the limit to the point where people get sick of them and there personal attacks. I really do feel bad for you I mean Anne Boyle the democratic power house of Omaha cant even get elected in a heavily democratic area. Why is that please do tell me. I want to hear what B.S. you have to give me today. Let me guess everyone that voted for Jim Vokal are uniformed and havent "seen the light" yet. Am I right guys.

Joe, it would be "their mouths" not "there mouth." And you'd want a question mark at the end of your last sentence.

I don't care about Republicans or Democrats. Both parties have managed to screw us over. Repubicans only care about themselves and Democrats only prentend to care about issues. I did not see Clinton try to push for equal rights for gays. He signed DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) and pushed the don't ask, don't tell policy that has created a witch hunt in the military, all while having oral sex with Monica Lewinsky. It is a shame that our society has to push values that only benefit themselves. Repulicans want to privatize social security, get rid of medicaid and medicare, and deny equal rights to homosexuals. At least they are open about it. What Republicans don't realize is that by privatizing social security, the younger generation will be paying DOUBLE tax: money to put away for their own retirement, and social security tax for those who are near retirement. Plus, the added burden of mental patients roaming the streets without medical treatment reaking havic, such as murder and other criminal activity linked to bi-polar, schitzophrenia, and personality disorders.
The religious zealots or radical Republicans, are trying to take control of this country by denying rights to people because they "FEEL" it isn't right. If we want a religous state, let's do it and deny rights to women too. According to the bible, the women's place is in the home. Additionally, the bible has set out what we can and what we cannot eat. And, those who commit adultry, should be put to death. Let's have a religious society, because anything else is just plain wrong (according to the religious right).
I thank god that I don't believe in religion. I do believe in a loving god who loves everyone regardless of whether they are gay or straight; whether a person is a sinner or a saint; and, whether a person is a Muslim, a Jew, a Hindu, a Buddhist, or a Christian.
If Jim Vokal is gay, which I suspect may be true, then it isn't our business. Who cares if he is gay. if he denies gays the same rights to access health care, life insurance, child care responsiblities, legal access to hospital care for each other and dependents, a place to live without being kicked out for being gay, protection from being fired from work, and the ability to pass on equity to a partner legally, than he isn't a true leader representing everyone.
I'm not afraid to stand up for my rights. I am a gay man living in a Nebraska where people have voted overwhelmingly to deny my rights to happiness with initiative 416. Both Democrats and Republicans voted for this initiative. Neither of you care about the little guy. You only care about yourselves. If you are Republican, you believe that government should stay out of people's lives. If you are Democrat, you believe that every man is important. It is too bad that you can't vote according to your conscious: to care about every man, and not to allow government to control another person's life, just because your preacher and religious organization told you it was wrong. What two consenting adults adhere to is not your business. I spent 26 years of my life in religion day in and day out. I even spent two years as a religious missionary. I never looked at porn, drank, smoked, or did drugs. I still managed to wind up gay.
I'm tired of people pretending to be my friend and stabbing me in the back. Democrats only pretend to care and Republicans refuse to care. I can't wait till a new party comes along that cares and carries through.
Religion has its place in society, not in politics. Religion is meant to better a person, not to legislate a society. God did not mean for everyone to be forced to abide by his laws. If he did, there would only be one religion (not over 700 different Christian religions, 2000 Buddhist religions, and many other different sects of Muslim, Jew and Hindu religions). Abiding by god's laws is a choice, not a law. If you are religious and feel that being gay is bad, then that is your choice. Let god do the judging. Quit being judgementalists and stay out of my life.
In conclusion, I think gay people need to support Jim Vokal. My significant other was married to two women before he came out of the closet. I have a friend of mine who fathered two children before he came out. Perhaps Mr. Vokal will decide to make the right decisions for a change and support gay issues in the city of Omaha. Perhaps he will help fight the anti-gay legislation plaguing this state that is discriminatory in nature. Encourage him to make the right decision now that he is elected.

Ed: Don't hold your breath. The idea that any politician on either side would decide to do something for the greater good is pretty far-fetched. I guess that the best the rest of us can do is take consolation that a good number of people out there are aware of the truth despite what the Weird Harold (the largest paper out there to have never won a journalistic pulitzer) tells us. In fact, I blame them for the backwards political climate here. If Omaha were just a little bigger it would have two newspapers - a check and balance if you will, and if Omaha were just a little smaller the truth would be too hard to conceal. For now, I'll just remain content to tell everyone I know how the emperor has no clothes.
