Local and national politics are the main focus of the UNO College Democrats Blog. But every once in a while we like to talk about things going on around campus. Today is one of those days.
While reading the Omaha World-Herald today, a news story caught my eye.
UNO adds lactation station, diaper tables
BY JUDITH NYGRENThe diaper set is finding visits to the University of Nebraska at Omaha a bit more child-friendly.
The university has 23 new diaper changing tables in men’s and women’s bathrooms across campus. It also has its first private lactation station for nursing moms.
Both additions will be celebrated today at 3 p.m. in the Milo Bail Student Center.
I really think the World-Herald dropped the ball when they titled the news story “UNO adds lactation station, diaper tables”. I think they missed a golden opportunity to use the line “A lactation station celebration”.
If you are wondering were these new stations are, look no further than the Infant Care Stations map.
As a mom I think that the stations are great! We have a lot of nontraditional students on campus so this is awesome. Besides nursing is perfectly natural thing to do. We Americans are so uptight when it comes to this subject and the formula industry likes us to be. They make more money if women opt out of nursing. I nursed all of my children but, had to stop when I went back to work and my children and I had a hard time.
I think it is about time the university paid attention to the needs of students who have children. Thanks Dr. Grams for being an advocate for us.
I think it’s great that women can have a place they can go to breastfeed in private if they so choose. Yay to UNO for recognizing and accomidating the needs of these non-traditional students! Robin is right though, society is very uptight about this when it is perfectly natural and very healthy. Wasn’t there something this winter that legalized breastfeeding in public places? (I believe Nancy Thompson introduced it.) I just thought that this recent and interesting piece of legislation should be pointed out.
Also, I didn’t see anything on your site about Sen. Ben Nelson’s appearance on The Daily Show this Monday, so I thought I’d mention it. Make sure you all tune in!
