This is still a developing story but it looks like President Bush will be visiting Nebraska after the State of the Union address. Click here for the full story.
Why is Bush visiting Nebraska? I think I know why…
* Raise money for mayoral candidate Dave Friend.
* The administration finally found out that the U.S. Congressman from District 2 is Lee Terry (not Terry Lee). He wants to assure Terry Lee that the mix-up will never happen again.
* Dubya made up some Pro-Bush buttons and will be selling them all week on campus.
* My personal plea to the president about parking at UNO has finally been answered.
* He was hypnotized by the UNO Marching Band.
* Cheney and Dubya drew straws (and we know who lost).
* Dubya heard about the stellar growth of the College Democrats at the University of Nebraska – Omaha and he decided he must do something about it.
P.S. I’m sorry about the title of this post. I just couldn’t resist. If there is a lot of backlash, I will change it (but I think it’s funny).
do i see a protest coming up?!
While he’s here… could someone inform George that Social Security was created as a result of the financial hardship brought about in the aftermath of the stock market crash. You know… a safety net… not -dependent- on market performance? Hello??? No doubt it will all be a great windfall for Wall Street though. I guess that’s what really counts.
I could go for a good protest
I protested on his turf- I think i could do with a good protest on our turf. Some Social Security Themed Protest? Maybe a gambling theme? Maybe an Old-Homeless-People Theme?
If you can get me close to W I’ll inform him.
Bush is coming to Omaha Feb 3 and will be departing Feb 4. On Feb 4, Bush will be holding a “conversation about social security” somewhere downtown. That means there will be alot of local media coverage. We need to have a protest Feb 4 opposing Bush’s plans for reforming social security. We need to get our point of view in front of people from Omaha and Lincoln.
I’m down with a protest, though to be honest i had plans to go to a strip club for someone’s birthday party. But hey, i’d rather see bush than boobs anyway.
You know, a protest might be a bad idea this time, and for two reasons.
1: You could make Omaha look bad. (People are being asked to refrain from doing so, as it could provide a bad image for Omaha. No s***. I just heard it over the news.)
2: If you guys do protest, you’d better keep control of your group, because the Secret Service, not the Omaha PD, has control over this event. One inciter (Someone who takes a perfectly reasonable protest and turns it into an all-out riot.) and the Secret Service has full rights to use force to quell said inciters, and even can kick you guys off the Qwest Center’s property. (In other words, one inciter, and things will get real ugly, real fast.)
I’m not trying to stop your protest. But, I’m trying to warn you, this isn’t going to be like Washington was. If you have a peaceful protest, you may not have anything to worry about. But, if you give the Secret Service any reason to think you’re a threat, let’s just say it isn’t going to be pretty.
Even if we werent present at the protest, there is still going to be a healthy showing of people, it isnt going to be just our protest. I highly disagree about the Omaha statement as well. There is a protest in every major city that dubya goes to, that doesnt make people think any differently than those cities. All that “dont protest” talk is just conservatives trying to suppress our voice anyway. If you dont voice your opinion, you are silently agreeing with the majority.
Supressing your voice? Try saving some lives. Mike, if I was trying to supress your voice, or anybody’s voice for that matter, I would sure as hell be doing a lot more than just this.
Save lives? What do you think could possiable happen?
Maybe we should just fall in line.
Ok, fine. Maybe I went a little overboard with that. I never said you should “fall in line”. But the Secret Service will act if you guys give them even the slightest idea that the President’s life if in jeopardy. I’ve seen rather peaceful protests turn into full-blown riots.
I’m not here to stop your group from protesting. I’m just trying to tell you to keep control of it, because there are people out there who would love nothing better to start riots. If one of them gets into your group, the Secret Service will do whatever it takes to stop the riot, even if it means breaking a few bones, busting a few skulls, or other possible things.
What? Since when is it a crime for someone like me to try and look out for people like you?
looks like the protest is a go…

If anyone wanted to save lives they wouldn’t have voted for Bush
Has anyone promoted the protest? We need some large numbers.
I got this email from a group called “Campaign For America’s Future”. So maybe we wont be the only group protest.

Dear xxxxxx,
After tonight’s State of the Union, President Bush will visit Nebraska to outline his #1 domestic priority: privatizing Social Security. Using a phony crisis to legitimize his plan, Bush wants to funnel billions of public dollars through his Wall Street friends.
In reality, Social Security is the most successful anti-poverty program our nation has ever seen.
Campaign for America’s Future has convened a massive coalition of state and national organizations to organize events in Omaha and Lincoln to demonstrate our opposition to Social Security privatization and point out that privatization will result in a loss of $152,000 in guaranteed benefits for young Nebraskans now entering the workforce.
The event information is as follows:
Thursday, February 3, 12 PM: Press Event in Lincoln, State Capitol Rotunda — 1445 K St., Lincoln NE 68509
State Senators, Economist, Student, Labor Leader, ARA leader
Contact Patrick Pannett (cell) 202-258-2311.
Signs will be available for the public
Friday, February 4, 7 AM: Rally outside Qwest Convention Center in Omaha
Meet at 10th & Capitol at Qwest Center
Look for signs and stage by convention center.
Contact Patrick Pannett (cell) 202-258-2311.
Signs will be available for the public
President Bush will do everything he can to win the public’s support for his risky privatization scheme. We need you to come to these rallies and tell President Bush that privatization is a bad idea and that you won’t support his efforts to sell out our Social Security to Wall Street.
Sincerely,
Adam Luna, Policy Director
Campaign for America’s Future
this protest has definitely been promoted quite well, im expecting a very good turnout
We also handed out almost a thousand fliers and put up just under a hundred posters on campus. More fliers will be handed out tomorrow.
Moveon.org also sent out an email to all their members in Nebraska, and emails were sent out to the John Kerry Meetup group email list (another hundred people who have attended events in the past).
Press releases also were sent out, and stories ran on several news stations.
This should be good.
