If you haven’t read the latest piece by Matthew Lytle, click here for the full column.
I was beginning to respect Matthew Lytle as a columnist but his latest work reveals just how much of a partisan hack he actually is. So, why do I believe this? Well, Matthew forgot to mention the fact that “The Passion Of The Christ” by Mel Gibson also won a People’s Choice Award. “Fahrenheit 9/11″ was named best film and “The Passion of The Christ” best film drama.
It seems logical to conclude that if the system was “rigged” for Michael Moore, than it was also “rigged” for Mel Gibson.
Hey, I even have proof.
I will call this People’s Exhibit B:
Pro-Family Voters Helped Make Gibson’s Passion the People’s Choice
Matthew, why didn’t you mention this in your column? Was Mel Gibson’s award a legitimate win or not? You can’t say the system was broken for one award but not another. Either both awards were rigged or they were both legitimate.
Are you sure you’re not steamed over the fact that I didn’t plug your site last time?
Yeah, I know the Passion was up for it, as was “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”. But, if The Passion was rigged, as you’re claiming, wouldn’t it at least have made the top three? (Knocking Shrek 2 or Spiderman 2 out?) When Martin Sheen introduced the nominees, he named three, which leads me to believe that they automatically eliminated the bottom two, which meant Passion didn’t get enough.
It may have been rigged, I’ll give you that much, but it may not have, and apparently those trying to win it for the Passion didn’t do enough to win. Double rigging, in this case, would feature the these two 1st and 2nd, not 1st (9/11) and either 4th/5th (Passion.)
But, if this whole thing was legit, as you are trying to claim, (and it reflected the true opinions of America) then wouldn’t John Kerry be the one being inaugurated this Thursday, not Bush?
I do have to say that I am glad my articles are no longer “propaganda”. But, in this case, your evidence is “Defense’s Exhibit A”, not “People’s Exhibit B.”
Matthew, I don’t think you read the blog post carefully.
“The Passion of the Christ” WON WON WON a People’s Choice Award. They finished in first place for Best Film Drama. If you don’t believe me, take a look at Mel with his award.
You can read the full story here.
Visit http://www.nbc10.com/entertainment/3974270/detail.html to see the nominees. The Passion was not up for favorite movie. Voters could choose between “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “Fahrenheit 9/11,” “The Incredibles,” “Shrek 2″ and “Spider-Man 2″.
Also your argument about voting is flawed. In your comment, you didn’t come out say that The Passion didn’t benefit from the same flawed system.
You basically said the people behind “Fahrenheit 9/11″ did a better job at taking advantage of the system. So, you are saying it doesn’t matter if you screwed the system but if you screwed the system and won then you should be punished (not the people that screwed the system and lost). Are you seeing how your logic is screwed up.
You need to condemn both groups or neither group. Or condem the People’s Choice Awards. You can’t just single out the people behind “Fahrenheit 9/11″ because they actually went online and voted.
Wait, maybe “Fahrenheit 9/11″ and “The Passion of the Christ” won legitimately. Did you ever think about that?
Also, it is silly to say that the vote was rigged because Michael Moore was notified before the actual announcement. I’m not a Hollywood insider but I’m sure people are notified about winning more frequently than we think. And also, just because Martin Sheen presented the award doesn’t mean the award is rigged either. Your argument has a million holes in it.
I could’ve sworn that “The Passion” was up for Favorite Movie. Oh well. Maybe that’s why I didn’t mention it in the opening argument.
You didn’t read what I said about Sheen, though. I thought it was interesting, but it wasn’t the main focus of the article. Nor did you read my explination behind the evidence. I was citing the voting method, (Paragraph 2) not that he was notified about the win beforehand. (Paragraph 1.)
You want a condemnation? Fine. I condemn the entire on-line voting system. Why would the people behind the People’s Choice Awards want to switch from a sturdy, reputable system like the Gallup Organization to a not-so-sturdy, fallable system like on-line voitng?
If that’s not the condemnation you’re looking for, tough noogies. I never saw “Fahrenheit 9/11″ nor “The Passion of the Christ,” which is why I didn’t critique them as well.
YES! - some of these things may be rigged. I’m sorry that these things bother you so much. Personally, they don’t throw off my day as much as they seem to be derailing yours. But seriously guys - I don’t think these movies had any bearing on the election. Ticket sales and awards won are no indication of who our future president will be. I know plenty of Bush supporters who have seen Fahrenheit more than once and plenty of die-hard democrats who watched Passion “religiously”. (Pardon the pun)
So if you want to get into the politics of Hollywood, then maybe our next open thread should discuss the ramifications of Jennifer and Brad’s break up. I’ll be interested on what you boys have to say about how ‘Coach Carter’ will affect the economy.
You know you’re right, Hannah. But, unfortunately, I think my next article will be focused on an issue that has risen it’s ugly head again. And it’s name: Michael Newdow. Here’s the link to the fill story: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,144763,00.html
Matt-
I had some nice things to say about you on the last thread, and I meant them. But seriously, just try to write one colum without starting the source from Fox or Drudge. Just one! (not that this news story isn’t a real one, but I want some indication that you do read real news every once in a while)
As for Mr. Newdow and your soon to be colum: If you could hold off A) insulting “elites” or “blue staters” or “latte-drinking-xyz” that would be great. Another prime hypocrisy you could avoid would be repeating the whole “liberal loonies” or other ad homynim attacks. Also attacking hollywood as liberal seems a bit shallow when the 2nd biggest name in GOP politics is Ahnuld, and the 3rd biggest is Charlton Heston. I only ask you to not use these staples of bad-right-wing “journalism” because I can’t remember a colum of yours in modern memory that didn’t include one of these.
Listen, John, I respect you. You stood up for me when nobody else would. I can never thank you enough for that.
But, the reason why I’m writing this article is because Newdow’s new onslaught, (This time, perhaps stronger than before) if it succeeds, had ramifications for both Republicans and Democrats alike. I don’t think I have to elaborate here.
As a matter of fact, I do read real news. My web browser, Safari, has this feature where I can view several pages from the same window, each in it’s own tab. One of the bookmarks brings up the Drudge Report, Fox News, and CNN websites (I also plan to add Reuters’ soon.) with a single click. The only reason why I cited Fox this time was because they were the first ones to have this story. (At the time I responded.) If CNN’s version can do better than Fox’s, or Drudge’s for that matter, I’ll quote it. If not, I’ve got no choice. Better to use a source people don’t like than not to use one at all.
And I’ve looked at the article, and so far, I haven’t even mentioned Hollywood or Charlton Heston, (By the way, when did I… Wait, don’t answer that.) and I haven’t called Mr. Newdow names or anything the like, unless you consider the quote, “Does the name ‘Custer’ mean anything to you?” as one. (From Robin Williams, Live on Broadway.) But, I’ve still got a couple of days before I have to submit it. I still have to add whether or not the Supreme Court decided to hear his case, mentioned in the quoted article.
*Since Matthew Lytle frequently interacts with this blog, I am writing this editoral critique on “No Longer The People’s Choice.”*
Mr. Lytle,
From a republican to a republican, we need to talk.
I realize your intentions to expand republican party support on campus, and I thank you for your efforts. In the mist of liberal impression on this campus, any student that joins the right is worth celebrating, and it’s achievements encourage me to have more join the republican cause.
Unfortunately, your January 18th article, “No Longer the People’s Choice.” is a step in the wrong direction for encouraging moderates to support our beloved cause.
Starting from the top, the title, you get this feeling like something politically catastrophic is happening. Like, my voice is being taken away, my right to vote is being taken away, the oppressive police-state is coming. So right off the bat, you have my attention.
A paragraph into the story, I figured out that you’re not talking about the fall of American democracy…but the People’s Choice Awards.
There is a journalistic term used for this, it is called the “Who Cares Method.” If the context clues isn’t a dead give-a-away, then research it in your Intro to Journalism 1000 textbook, I’m sure it’s in the glossary.
In your introduction paragraph and second paragraph, you sound disgruntled that Michael Moore won a award. Why is this such a puzzling dilemma? Matt, this is CBS, the home of Dan Rather! Don’t get me wrong, I loathe at that hairy Jubba the Hutt. In the spotlight of the media, Michael Moore has become a next to a household name. By now, America should have their opinions of him made up. Either you hate him or love him, there is no grey. So why continue on and on about him? Why give him more publicity? Why throw gasoline on a fire to hope to put it out?
In your third paragraph, your first sentence is, “Sheen’s presentation is not the real focus of this story.” Then WHY did you spend ¾ of your last paragraph talking about him?
You claim that the voting was rigged, o.k., I can use evidence to help me believe it. So your “Exhibit A” is a article from the New York Times. I’m sure that is a good source, however when you have “gossip” in your U.R.L link, “empirical” doesn’t pop into my head.
After “Exhibit A”, you say the first tip is that CBS switched from Gallup (which is leftist slanting), to online polling. Because of that, votings are rigged? I doubt that because its is faster to process information into a server then to have a operator write down your voting. Also, it is cheaper to have a computer do it then hundreds of operators on the clock.
Next paragraph you back up your argument with rumors and admitting you can’t confirm it.
Although, I think the far left is well….”looney.” It is foolish to claim a group of people is “looney” in a newspaper story. It is degrading and such intolerance is not going to attract moderates to the Republican Party.
Hey what happened to all the Exhibits?
The next chuck of evidence is from Fox News. Matt, I love Fox News, they’re my preferred newscast. But they are right biased. Just like CNN, CBS, and NPR is liberal biased, everyone knows it. When I see someone quote a story from Fox News, I roll my eyes. I wanted hard evidence to prove your theory.
Then in your second to last paragraph, you explain a cookie to this wonderfully computer illiterate world. You accuse a cookie for voter fraud. Only far off the scale liberals give me such out of this world conspiracy theories. I believe your analyicals need more work.
On a side note, stop saying “Ladies and gentlemen.” It’s redundant and cliché.
In the end, I was left puzzled and wondering was the purpose of this peice was? Why do I care if there was voter fraud? If there was, what should CBS do about it? Where’s the solvency? As a editorialist, such unanswered questions and leaving your readers wondering and assuming is not good
LYTLE, YOU’RE MY BOY!
Your Conservative Ally,
Anonymous
I just think that it is funny that we are getting all huffy about the people’s choice award. This is just proof of how split our nation is. Seriously, there has to be something better to write about.
To the random conservative guy – You say that you want to bring new people to your party and each one is worth celebrating. Well you can have as many people as you want because more people means diversity and the only thing that has kept you in power is unity. (I know Democrat crazy talk, having to appease more than one group of people)
My last concern – please keep these things short.
When I start reading these giant blogs, I feel I am riddled with ADD, just wondering around. You can say a lot in a paragraph.
Stop ranting about CBS and dan rather. First of all, rather isnt the one calling the shots, he just reports the news. Second, they admitted it was a mistake, and third, BUSH WON REELECTION, so it doesnt matter what happened. Republicans are best at thouroughly destroying ones character when they do not deserve it. (ie, dan rather, john kerry, john mcain, the list goes on and on). The only way the republicans EVER have gotten to where they are is to spread rumors about people. I suppose it all started in the 80s when the evangelicals said you are going straight to hell if you vote democrat. Unfortunately, some people ignorant people listened to this crap.
Mike, that’s funny, because I never heard that voting Democrat meant a one-way ticket to Hell. And, I don’t remember mentioning Dan Rather, either.
I wasnt talking about you, i was voicing my opinion on the “concerned conservative’s” comment
Oh. Sorry ’bout that.
Hey there Matthew Aug 30 “Questions” So now we have all the South Vietnamese ARVNS running from firefights. Tell me where did you get your information from. A reliable source? I know your way to young to have gone there. A racist comment Matthew.
With all your support for Bush and the war why havent you gone to the recruiting office and signed up? Wouldn’t that be real support? Do you volunteer at a VA hospital ? r do you just sit at home with a dog c ollor on eating orange chicken?
The comment on Orange Chicken being on the “menu” where was this menu being published? Hey, I have an idea if I buy you a orange chicken dinner will you parade around in front of Milo Bail on your hands and knees and bark like a dog? The idea was i suppose, to say if prisoners eat Orange chicken can they really have it so rough. Wanna find out?
Maybe support would be offering support to all people who have fought, have had loved ones who have died, lost limbs, and suffer from PTSD instead of useing racist, ignorant comments to validate your exsistance on the planet.
Matthew, I don’t hate you, (your call for sympathy) I would like to hear the truth from you and ask for you to keep the racist statements next to your dish on the floor.
