New Semester, New Buttons

Here is sneak preview of some of the new buttons that may appear on the UNO campus next semester. Don’t worry, we will continue to sell some of the popular anti-Bush buttons from the Fall semester.

The election is over but that doesn’t mean our fight is over.

Is there something you like (or don’t like about the buttons)? Post a comment!

i like the buttons, but im a little uneasy about the hillary buttons. I would definitely support her if she was nominated, but i dont think she would have a chance to win.

    How about Barack Obama ‘08?

  3. 3 Jared Dec 16th, 2004 at 11:57 pm

Good buttons, but im also a little uneasy about Hilary. In fact, she scares me a little and I seriously doubt she’ll get the nomination. I dont think she could size up against a big wig GOP. But who knows, 4 years is a long time. Anybody is better than W. My thought for a button would be….
_______Insert Name (Not Bush) 08′ or something like that

  4. 4 John Owens-Ream Dec 18th, 2004 at 1:41 pm

Bill Clinton ‘08 I wouldn’t mind as a button. I’d prefer to keep the sites set on ‘06 and even ‘05 for at least a little bit though. Students 4 Fahey I would seriously like to make…or some phrase equally catchy. If we’re ever going to have a hope of turning out college kids in a mayors race, we’ve got to start building name ID and such.

Bill Clinton ‘08? ______Insert Name (Not Bush) 08′? John, Jared, have you two even heard of the 22th Amendment?!?
It says, and I quote from the National Archives Website, “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this Article was proposed by Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.” (This was ratified in 1951, so the latter part doesn’t count.)

To translate into terms you can understand, you can only be elected for two terms. You can serve somebody else’s term, but only for the last two years. (The first two must be as Vice-President.) And even at that, the elected terms must come after the first two years.

I know Hillary won’t make it to the White House, though. Geraldine Ferraro had a chance as Mondale’s VP candidate in 1984, and that didn’t go anywhere. Besides, when you’re cracking jokes during the State of the Union address after 9/11, people notice. (I saw the speech.)

Oh, and the only draft you support is beer? Gee, so that means that you supported Bill Clinton’s draft dodging during the Vietnam War? He fled to Canada, like a craven little coward. Don’t start bitching about Bush entering the National Guard. My father, who was drafted himself, said that if his father had enough money, he’d had been sent to the Indiana National Guard. Instead, he proudly served in ‘Nam, which is more than I can say for “Dodgy” Clinton. And don’t start abut Cheney’s exemptions, because if the draft were reinstated, each and every one of you would get to sit on that same exemption. Gee, it’s good when it works for you, huh?

Bush still sucks? When have they attacked us after 9/11? Even your precious Michael Moore, on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, admitted that “we haven’t been attacked since.” Get with the program, people.

Hillary ‘08? C’mon guys, we just lost one election, do we already have to start working to lose the next one?

  7. 7 John Owens-Ream Dec 20th, 2004 at 4:43 am

The point of a Bill in ‘08 is to remind everyone of those long ago years of peace and prosperity that worked so well for us. Irony? Get it?

I’d point you to a recent poll by fox showing that 58% of America think Hillary would be a fine president, which is more than currently think Bush is. And if you saw his speech, you have to admit that it was laughable. I would have cracked jokes. I mean, making fighting steroid use among athletes one of the center points of the speech? In the biggest speech after 9/11?? What a joke, that’s a high school debate topic, not something the president needs to use his peach for. Moreover, who the heck is in favor of steroid use? How is bringing it up in his only real chance to talk about policy going to do anything for anybody?

Bush still sucks. Even Bush’s own guys have to admit that worldwide terrorism has gone up since we invaded Iraq. We are less safe, and moving towards being 200 billion farther in the hole because of it.

We don’t support the draft. That would be the point of the buttons. But if you’re someone like Cheney who DID support the draft, then finding a million exemptions is a bit hypocritical. By the way, Clinton didn’t “flee to canada” he accepted a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford. Not exactly the same. But had he decided to go to jail over it I would have supported him the same, because he publicly spoke out against the draft the whole way. Unlike chickenhawks like Frist, Bush, Cheney, and half a dozen other leading Gopers who are big war and draft supporters, but never served themselves.

get with the program isn’t exactly the most powerful advice when your comments are so riddled with lies, distortions, and hypocrisy.

I’m done responding to this guy now. Someone else take a turn beating up the obvious punching bag and watching all the crap come out of it. If he can’t understand irony, much less be bothered to read real news sources (that means no more fox, no more drudge) then why should we even bother?

  8. 8 Matthew Lytle Dec 20th, 2004 at 10:04 pm

Ok, Johnny, if you want to play that way, I can play right back.

If you want to take away my right to use Fox News and the Drudge Report, then I get the statutory authority to take away your right to watch The Daily Show, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, and even to read their respective news sites, or even every single news paper ever published. (This also applies to everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, in this country.) Hell, just for good measure, you won’t even be able to listen to Air America. And all I have to say is that my constitutional rights were infringed upon.

These rights apply to everyone, Mr. Owens-Ream, and I mean EVERYONE in this great country. Our constitution was founded so that everyone has the right to say what they want without persecution. Because of this, though I may disagree with what you say, (and I do) but I shall defend until death your right to say it, as you should do for me as well.

Don’t believe me? My father did the exact same thing. It was around the time when Tennessee was going to play Nebraska for the National title. At Eppley Airfield, it was a sea of Husker red, about three to four hundred fans waiting to fly out to the championship game. He decided to wear a Tennessee cap when he went down there, and was taken aside by five Husker fans, who said, and I quote, “You’d better take off that cap, or else.” My father looked them straight in the eye and said, in a voice loud enough so that everyone could hear, “If I’m not allowed to wear this, then you won’t be able to wear your Husker red, nor will there be a single piece of Nebraska stuff in this entire state.” The five backed off, and everybody in the terminal cleared a path for him, not saying a single word.

Isn’t the Constitution a wonderful thing?

  9. 9 John Owens-Ream Dec 21st, 2004 at 12:35 pm

Considering the liberal stereotypes you’re so prone to using, I would have thought that you also would have stereotyped me as an ACLU member. IE, I would never attack your constitutional right to read biased news, nor the constitutional right of Fox and Drudge to spew forth that filth. If at any point I implied that, then I deeply am sorry, because one of the nice things about being liberal is you get to stand up for civil liberties and the bill of rights. (The nice thing about being a conservative like your precious Scalia or Thomas is you get to say that the first amendment does not protect freedom of the press- so I’d watch who you imply doesn’t like free speech).

I did imply, in fact out right stated, that Fox and Drudge are painfully biased towards republicans and ultra-conservatives. Because the maybe three times you’ve ever bothered to find a source for a claim, you quoted twice Drudge and once Fox, I think it’s fair to say you get a lot of your news from them. If you want to “get with the program,” or at least operate in the reality-based community, I recommend you start reading real news. And if you’re argument is that all “real news” is just slanted towards liberals, which seems to be what you’re saying, then I would point you to any number of not-for-profit and nonpartisan studies proving you horribly wrong. While the majority (about 70%) of reporters are democrats, the majority (about 80%) of editors are Republicans. However, the majority of both say that they are ideologically independent. Except at fox where a pathetic 92% of reporters are both Conservative and Republican, and no managing editors are democrats. I think Drudge makes it clear where he stands too. [The studies can be found on the front pages of www.factcheck.com (University of Penn. operated), MediaMatters.org, the Media Center, Fairness in the News, PressWatch, and several others]

And “I may not agree with your right to say…/ fight to the death…” that quotation is from Thomas Paine. He was probably the most liberal of all the founding fathers and founded the New York State Liberal Party.

I seriously need to stop writing these replies, I just keep reading something and going: “ooh, ooh, that’s so obviously wrong that when I point it out to him he’ll realize he’s been living in a Conservative News Alternate Reality!” Ignorance a dangerous thing.

Wow, little Matty really likes his daddy!!! Hey J- O.R. can I call you Johnny now? that sounds cute. Anyways, so Matthew are you saying you support the draft, because you haven’t said you were against it? And about your dad being drafted, its funny how you degrade Clinton for accepting a scholarship for school(not fleeing to Canada) but yet you say so yourself that your dad would have done the same thing by dodging the war and enlisting in the national gaurd(which in the ‘Nam era was a non combat position) had his own father had the money. So really he didn’t proudly serve in Nam on free will by enlisting in the Army, he was drafted. Props to your father and all I respect anyone who has served in war. Now about my family, my father came from a wealthy family, his dad was a doctor, with a military background, my grandfather proudly served in WWII ( he was also a pilot), but instead of dodging the draft or having his father get him into the National Guard, my dad enlisted and served proudly in Vietnam. My question being to you Matthew, since you value this president and his administration so much, and you deem the “war on terror” important, are you in the army? if not why don’t you enlist? Serve your country proudly Matthew, then start talking about draft dodgers. And on the comment about terrorist, thanks for pointing out that they have not attacked us since 9/11, but do you honestly think they are not planning an attack now, or that they will never attack again?? Oh, and North Korea has never had a stronger nuclear program than they do now. What program are you with?

HILLARY ROCKS MY WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am all for having the Hillary 08 buttons, but I just think it is a little too early to start that. But I do have full confidence in Hillary making it back to the White House, if and only if, John Edwards(the hottest politician alive or dead) does not run again. Maybe an Obama VP 08 button would be ok, but I just think he is a little too young to be headed to the top seat just yet. And i think it would be best if he served 8 yrs as VP so then we could have a great administration for 16 years with democrats in the white house, when he is President the next time around.

I love how republicans can seem to quote amendment and artcile when it suites them. How very versed you are in our constituion. Too bad that does not apply when we are talking about the errosion of our basic rights as citizens. Does anyone remeber the patriot act? My guess is that most republicans won’t be whinning about the constitution of by 2008 they think they have a shot with the governator.
