NE-Sen: Hagel’s Running For Reelection

We figured out about a couple weeks ago here at UNO Dems that Lee Terry was running for reelection, and not the Senate. It wasn’t until Thursday that we figured out why. We’re ready to say with a great level of confidence that Chuck Hagel is running for reelection, and that Jon Bruning will challenge him for the nomination.

All signs right now are pointing to Chuck Hagel running for a third term in the U.S. Senate. Consider:

  • Bruning’s announcement last week, complete with attacks on Hagel’s record.
  • Bruning’s poll which pits himself against Hagel in a Republican Primary.
  • Hagel’s responses to Bruning’s announcements, complete with attacks on Bruning’s past.
  • The Nebraska Congressional delegation’s willingness to listen to overtures from Sen. Fred Thompson.
  • Mike Fahey’s increased focus on raising money for a reelection bid in 2009.
  • Bob Kerrey’s insistence that he is 99% sure he won’t run despite his polling to gauge interest in the race, complete with a de facto endorsement of Hagel.
  • Chuck Hagel’s scheduled May 18 fundraiser, hosted by Governor Dave Heineman, and supported by some powerful local business interests.
  • Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader, making a visit to Omaha for that fundraiser in May.

The final two items seal the deal. Chuck Hagel is running for reelection. Given his statements on the war, his votes on the Iraq supplemental, there is no way in hell that Mitch McConnell would even want to be seen in the same room as Chuck Hagel for a fundraising event, let alone headline the event for Hagel, unless he had assurances from Hagel that he was running for reelection to the Senate. This should also be a key signal of where the National Republican Party will throw its weight. I’ve long thought that if Hagel ran for reelection, it would play like a Republican version of the Lieberman-Lamont primary in Connecticut, 2006. Hagel has powerful forces behind him in the Republican Party, and Bruning’s in an unenviable position right now. If he fails, his career in Nebraska politics is over. Hagel will - once and for all - claim his supremacy over the Nebraska Republican Party.

It’s time for someone real. It’s time to get up off the mat and say “enough.” The Democratic Party will have a real opportunity to offer a true alternative to Nebraska’s voters. Things being the way they are in politics, you’re not going to find a political insider willing to run for this seat. I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

At this point in 2005, I had no idea who Scott Kleeb was. I knew Jim Esch’s family, but had no idea that Jim was running for Congress, and no way of knowing the kind of revolutionary campaign he would ultimately wage.

The point is this: we will find a candidate. Someone will be willing to run for this seat. And if we don’t, then we should just fold up our tent right now and go home, because we don’t deserve to be called the Democratic Party.

You’ll forgive me for using this space as my soapbox. I haven’t done it in a while on issues of intraparty politics, but this is something that needs to be said. I realize that a number of the individuals responsible for the attitudes I’m going to address are no longer employed by the state party, but that does not mean the attitude does not still exist. I offer the standard disclaimer right now: these are my opinions. I state them without reservation. I do not speak for UNO College Democrats, or the Nebraska Young Democrats. With that, I offer a few suggestions to the state Democratic Party leadership for the 2008 cycle:

  • You are not the whole party. We - the voters, the members, the volunteers, the activists, and the candidates - are. Don’t forget that. It is not your choice who is and is not a Democrat. And no one has to ask you for permission to run.
  • You work for us. It’s not the job of lesser-known candidates to demonstrate viability before the state party gives them respect, let alone support. Either the state party works for all candidates and works to lift up the entire state party, or it’s simply a means to funnel money from the national party to one particular candidate’s campaign. It’s clear to me what the state party was in 2006. It’s my sincere hope that we don’t repeat that mistake in 2008.
  • This is the race of 2008. We cannot continue to concede statewide contests before they even begin. If we concede this race - a race to clearly demonstrate beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Republicans in this state are only interested in dragging politics into the mud, while the Democrats are ready to offer real alternatives for the good of all Nebraskans. Chuck Hagel and Jon Bruning will be fighting for the hearts and minds of Republicans. Our candidate will be the candidate for Nebraska. If we miss this opportunity, we can’t claim any successes in 2008.

Not One More

Note: The Tribute To The Fallen event that we held this week has no partisan purpose, and whether you are for or against the war, I think we all agree that our men and women in the military deserve honor and respect. We aren’t going to tell you what to think about the war, and we hope that you can respect the fact that most of us believe this war should end. That said, the UNO College Democrats Blog is a partisan blog, and we pride ourselves on having frank and honest discussions about the issues. We’ve spoken about Iraq here before, and we will do it again. And with the emotions that this week’s Tribute brought out in all of us, I think it would be wrong to stay silent. The opinions expressed in this post are mine, and you are welcome to disagree with them. But I think those soldiers who the 3,334 flags represent deserve this debate. They deserved it long before this war began.

On Monday, nine soldiers died in Iraq. Among those soldiers were two Nebraskans, Ken Locker, Jr. and Kevin Gaspers. Monday night, as we were placing the flags for Tribute, we had to add nine more flags for these soldiers. Tuesday, after we finished reading the names of the dead, two more died, and we added two more flags for those fallen. 3,334 American flags, representing 3,334 men and women who are never coming back home. 3,334 families who will never see them again. 3,334 brave Americans who gave their lives for this country.

But the tragedy of this war is grander than the American lives lost. The thousands of wounded American soldiers whose lives will never be the same. The thousands of Americans who are seperated from their loved ones. The thousands of Iraqi soldiers who die each month. The tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians who have died in the streets and marketplaces of Iraq. The millions of refugees who have fled their homes in fear. We have no flags for them. They are forgotten.

Our sincerest hope is that next year, there won’t be any more flags in the ground. Not one more. We realize how futile this hope is. Between the time that we took the flags down last night, and the time of this writing, three more Americans have died in Iraq. 3,337. April of 2007 is the deadliest month in Iraq in 3 years, yet our President continues to insist that his “new strategy” is working. We need our troops out of Iraq. We need them home.

Not one more day in Iraq. Not one more lie from this administration. Not one more life lost. Not one more flag in the ground. It’s time to bring our toops home.

Tribute To The Fallen - Photo Blog

Photos from the first night of Tribute are up in the photo gallery. We’ll be adding more as the week goes on. Special thanks so far to 40 or so volunteers who showed up to place flags, and the the members of the media (CBS, NBC, Fox, and the Omaha World-Herald so far…) who have covered the event.

Also of course a very special thanks to Mayor Mike Fahey, Councilman Suttle, Councilman Gernandt, Sen. Tom White, Douglas Co. Treasurer John Ewing, and Douglas County Registrar of Deeds Diane Battiatto for their kind words at the opening ceremony.

As always, don’t forget to check www.tributetothefallen.com for more updates.

Tribute To The Fallen

Last year, on April 25, 2006, the UNO Democrats presented a Tribute to the Fallen. This week, we are privileged and honored to again present this Tribute to the men and women who have given their lives in service to this great nation.

The war in Iraq inspires intense feelings on both sides of the aisle, as frequent readers of this blog can no doubt attest. But above all else, we hold nothing but the highest respect for the men and women fighting in Iraq right now. And it is with deep respect and the utmost dignity that we present this tribute to our fallen soldiers.

Last year, we placed 2,390 flags, each representing one life lost in this war. Since then, almost 1,000 more American soldiers have died in Iraq. But they are more than just numbers, they were brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, husbands, wives, fathers, and mothers. Many of them were our age. Each loss is tragic, the grief shared by their friends and family unimaginable. These soldiers deserve our highest respect. They all fought and died for this country, for the very freedoms that make this nation so great.

Regardless of what you believe about the war in Iraq, we hope that you will join with us this week in honoring the sacrifice that these brave young men and women have made for this country. And that they will not be forgotten. That the scope of this tragedy is more than just a number, but something that all of us can see.

Please join us on Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. begin our Tribute, reading the names of each fallen soldier, and on Thursday evening at 5 p.m. as we honor the Nebraska soldiers who have died in Iraq. All throughout the week, the flags will remain standing, a reminder of the sacrifice of each and every man and woman to whom we pay Tribute.

NE-Sen: Bruning Releases Poll Showing Him Leading Hagel

If it’s true, it certainly explains why he decided to jump in this week:

Attorney General Jon Bruning said Monday he led Sen. Chuck Hagel by 9 points in a survey last week of likely Republican voters in a 2008 GOP Senate primary contest.

The poll of 404 Republicans was conducted by Bruning’s pollster, Dresner, Wickers and Associates of San Francisco. In a head-to-head matchup, Bruning led by 47 percent to 38 percent.

Nebraskans are “very troubled” by Hagel’s criticism of President Bush and his support for legislation calling for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, Bruning said.

If these results are anywhere close to accurate, it should be setting off alarms in Hagel’s camp. This early and the incumbent is trailing the state Attorney General? Maybe Hagel did far more damage than we realized to his reputation among Republicans.

The Heineman/Hagel Dynamic - And What it Means for the GOP

Say what you will about Dave Heineman, and, believe me, I can say a lot. But he didn’t get where he is today by being a bad politician. I mean, for someone with as little personality as “Heine,” he managed to defeat a Nebraska deity, and then went on to win with over 75% of the vote. Not bad for someone who has all of the inspiring qualities of a pet rock. By comparison, Lee Terry seems like a rhetorical giant.

How does a man like Dave Heineman become governor of Nebraska?

In 1994, Heineman defeated incumbent State Treasurer Dawn Rockey by a 54-46 margin, spending what was, by 1994 standards, a large sum of $100,000 on the race. (Compare that to last year, where Bruning spent 3 times that amount just on television ads, in an unopposed race). Before that, he was a Fremont City Councilman, and executive director of the Nebraska Republican Party.

In 1998, he was reelected with little trouble, and in 2001, was appointed lieutenant governor by Mike Johanns after David Maurstad took a regional director position with FEMA. Heineman’s successor, Lorelee Byrd, managed to cause quite a bit of controversy. More on that in a little bit.

Lt. Governors are sort of afterthoughts in Nebraska politics. No one really pays attention to them - they don’t have any real power. Mrs. Heineman has more power than the Lt. Governor. Quick, name our Lieutenant Governor. (It’s Rick Sheehy). So to say that Heineman was “elected” Lt. Governor in 2002 is a bit of an overstatement. Johanns was re-elected as governor, and Heineman stood there quietly, along for the ride.

Byrd, the Deputy Treasurer, was appointed to succeed Heineman, with Heineman’s backing. In 2002, she was elected, unopposed by any Democrat (this seems to be a common problem, folks. Can we fix that??). Then, she decided she was going to write $300,000 worth of checks, hold them, and void them after the legislative session ended so her office could have more money. Yeah, no impropriety there. None whatsoever.

This is where the trouble starts - it was brewing long before Heineman became governor. Long before Osborne got in the race. Long before Kate Witek decided she wanted to be a Democrat for a week.

Witek, as State Auditor, requested an investigation into the cancelled checks. Attorney General Bruning sent in the state patrol. From there, the investigation consumed the State Treasurer’s office, even at one point focusing on Heineman himself. Were that this the only conflict between Witek and Heineman - it was not, they clashed before during Heineman’s tenure as Treasurer - it might be explained away. But the seedy underbelly of Republican politics that lies just beneath the surface of the story of Dave Heineman helps provide some background to the bad blood between Bruning and Hagel/Heineman - and why I never believed for a second that Bruning was in fact a “Hagel guy.”

The whole thing threatened to boil over in 2005-2006. Virtually everyone assumed that Tom Osborne would run for governor in 2006, and Mike Johanns - term-limited out of office - would challenge Ben Nelson. So when Bush tapped Johanns in late 2004 to become the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, everyone was thrown for a loop. Heineman appeared to be every bit the “lame-duck” governor. His most important decision, by his own admission, was picking the design for the Nebraska state quarter. So, political observers were still convinced that Heineman wouldn’t dare run for a full term, not with the giant, Tom Osborne, on the horizon.

Heineman’s announcement that he would indeed seek a full term as governor came as a surprise - but nowhere near the surprise of Chuck Hagel’s preemptive endorsement of Heineman for governor, before Osborne had even made an official announcement. Osborne even took care to announce his runningmate - State Auditor Kate Witek. Bruning endorsed Osborne for Governor. Heineman ran an impressive campaign. And it was all over. Hagel and Heineman asserted their absolute control over the state Republican Party. Against this backdrop, a right-wing, anti-choice Republican decided she needed to leave the party and go join the Democrats (after all, they’re desperate!).

Bruning’s role in this is one of ruthless ambition - not unlike Heineman’s. The difference is, Bruning attached himself to the man he saw as the rising star, while Hagel made his man the star. The giant killer. And, even if Heineman didn’t hate Bruning’s guts already for launching an investigation into his office, or endorsing his opponent, Heineman owes Hagel his political career. Now, Bruning - ever the political opportunist - sees an opening as the king of the Nebraska Republican Party has alienated himself from Nebraska Republicans by saying things that make sense. One last opportunity to overthrow the Hagel/Heineman crowd and make himself the king of the Nebraska GOP.

Make no mistake, this is a sordid lot, a mix of unsavory characters known as the Nebraska Republican Party. And they’re about to go for each other’s throats. Grab the popcorn. This is gonna be fun.

Kyle Michaelis = Jon Bruning?

With apologies to our good friend Kyle, this was just too good to pass up.

Our nemeses over at the Leavenworth Street blog dug up the oft-rumored liberal columns a young Jon Bruning wrote for the Daily Nebraskan back in 1992-1993. This particular article they found was entitled, “Conservatives, Come Out of the Closet.” Ironic, to say the least.
-

A commenter named “Eric” researched the articles, and found some more quotes, but this observation just about made me fall over laughing:

I can understand people having evolving views over a decade or so, but this much is a little hard to swallow. Can you imagine Kyle Michaelis 15 years from now launching a primary challenge from the right of the most conservative member of the Senate? (yeah, yeah, I know - you don’t think Hagel is conservative - whatever).

So now we know. The New Nebraska Network is just Kyle’s diabolical plot to become a Republican Senator in 2024. I think he’ll have to do some explaining about that whole Nebraska Young Democrats thing, though

NE-Sen: Bob Kerrey Asked For Polling

Before I begin, remember that I think I’ve had about two accurate predictions concerning Nebraska politics in the last couple of years, and one of those came just yesterday when Jon Bruning basically announced he was challenging Chuck Hagel for the Republican nomination.

So, when I heard rumors on Monday about a poll that was going around asking a bunch of questions about Bob Kerrey, I readily dismissed it. “There’s no way he’s running for Senate.” I still believe that. But it did intrigue me. Who was polling for Bob Kerrey, and why?

Turns out it was Paul Johnson, a longtime Kerrey advisor, who most recently helped orchestrate winning campaigns for Senator Ben Nelson and Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey. Johnson did so at Kerrey’s request. The Omaha World-Herald has more:

WASHINGTON - Former Nebraska Democratic Sen. Bob Kerrey recently tested the waters for a possible U.S. Senate bid, but he said Thursday evening that there was only a 1 percent chance that he would run again - and only if GOP Sen. Chuck Hagel didn’t run for re-election next year.

Kerrey asked his longtime political adviser, Paul Johnson, to gauge public opinion on him. That led to Democratic pollster Harrison Hickman’s sampling Nebraskans’ views with some telephone calls. Hickman didn’t conduct a full-fledged poll, Kerrey said.

Kerrey said he was told that the results were “the same old stuff. Some people like you, some people don’t.”

This isn’t the first time that Kerrey has flirted with a return to politics. In 2005, he briefly considered running for the Democratic nomination for mayor of New York City before deciding to drop out. But it’s that very brief flirtation that would doom him in the eyes of Nebraska voters. We saw what happened in a similar situation, a Louisiana institution, John Breaux, considered seeking the Democratic nomination for Governor, only to drop out amid concerns that his residency in Maryland would become an issue in the campaign. Kerrey is no less an institution to us here in Nebraska. But his career in elected office is over, and given the kind of slime that was thrown at him toward the end of his final term in the Senate, I’m not so sure he’d want to go through that again. And, anyone who knows me, knows that I’d have some serious reservations about giving the Democratic nomination to Bob Kerrey - one issue, above all else, will be in play in 2008, and Kerrey is unfortunately on the wrong side of that issue.

So, what’s the state of play, now?

  • Our strongest Democratic candidate, Mike Fahey, has said in no uncertain terms that he will not run if Chuck Hagel runs for reelection. Bob Kerrey has now said the same. He also says there’s only a 1% chance, if Hagel does not run, that he’d run for Senate.
  • At the moment, Chuck Hagel is looking very vulnerable in his own party. Between weak fundraising numbers and Jon Bruning’s challenge, retirement might be looking like a pretty good option for Hagel right now.
  • If Hagel runs, and loses in the primary, as of right now, we have no candidate even sniffing at the race under that scenario. And Bruning, especially if he’s running against Hagel, is quite beatable in a general election. Provided, of course, we have a candidate who knows what he/she is doing.

I’m still sticking to my guns, that if Chuck Hagel drops out, Mike Fahey will jump in. We’ll have to see, in the next few months, how Bruning’s decision effects our candidates’ timetables.

NE-Sen: Bruning’s Running No Matter What Hagel Does

Don Walton:

The plot not only thickened in the 2008 Senate race Wednesday night, it threatened to spin out of control.

Attorney General Jon Bruning is ready to enter the 2008 Republican primary whether Sen. Chuck Hagel seeks re-election or not. Bruning confirmed his intentions in a statement released Thursday morning.

Hagel’s recent vote supporting a timeline for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq and his recent criticism of President Bush provide “significant reasons” to enter the Senate race, the attorney general said.

“Senator Hagel voted with the Democratic leadership against President Bush on the most important issue facing our country,” Bruning said.

And with that, it’s on. I had strong feelings that Bruning was going to challenge Hagel, but no real confirmation. Now, Bruning is using all of the reasons why Republicans distrust Hagel to explain why he is running for Senate. Make no mistake, Jon Bruning is running against Chuck Hagel. Things just got a whole lot more interesting, folks.

Walton speculates further on Bob Kerrey’s intentions, based on a poll that’s been going around (I think someone told us about this Monday night.) Kerrey insists he’s not running, and based on the fact that he’s still living in New York, I’d say that’s right. Still, I wonder who is polling Bob Kerrey here in Nebraska… They must have their reasons.

All of this news comes on the heels of Mike Fahey giving his strongest indication yet that he will seek a third term as mayor of Omaha if he does not run for Senate. He doesn’t plan to make a decision until later in the year.

Adrian Smith Showing Weakness

While I usually leave everything related to the 3rd District, Adrian Smith, or Western Nebraska to our wonderful friends over at SmithWatch… I just couldn’t help but point out the obvious (well obvious if you’re a geek like me who like to read FEC Fundraising Numbers).

Adrian Smith, the brand-new Republican congressman from the 3rd, just can’t seem to get very good at fundraising. You see, when running for Congress lots of people want to give you money; especially when you’re a Republican in a very Republican district like Smith was. Which was why it was suprising that Smith wasn’t able to raise much much more than he did last time around. That left many of us to speculate that he just isn’t very good at raising money.

Now that doesn’t make him a bad congressman (if you want to know why he’s a bad congressman, just spend ten minutes over at SmithWatch yourself)… I can think of a number of Democratic candidates who weren’t very good at raising money but who I love dearly.

But it could be a problem for Adrian if he still can’t raise any money. You see, when you’re a first term congressman people really love to give you money. Now that Smith is in Congress he should be able to raise lots of easy dollars every two years from PACs of companies affected by the committee he sits on. The corrupt way this works is one of the big reasons Jim Esch pledged not to take PAC money last time around… but I digress.

But in the last quarter, Smith only raised $104,000… not counting his $30k in debt left over from the last campaign. That means Smith’s Cash On Hand (CoH) is only about $65,000… compare that to Lee Terry’s $215k CoH.

So is Scott Kleeb going to step up and run again? Well, Scott still has nearly as much in the bank as Smith did, at $64k.

Run Scott! Run!
