Tribute to the Fallen

We are the UNO College Democrats, and we humbly and respectfully ask you to pay tribute to those Americans who have, in turn, paid the ultimate price in fighting for our country.

Since the invasion of Iraq, almost 2390 Americans have been lost. Each of them had a name, a life, a family. To pay tribute, their names will be read Tuesday April 25th, starting early in the morning and going until the evening. We won’t stop until every name has been read and every soldier remembered.

In our group we have brothers, sisters, and wives of those serving on the ground in Iraq right now. In our group we have members of the Army, sons and daughters of veterans, and future enlistees. We are fiercely patriotic. We have those who opposed the war, and those who supported it.

But today, all of us, and hopefully all those who see the flags, or hear this message, are united to pay tribute to those who have given their lives for us.

If you pray, please pray for the fallen and their families today.
If not, take a moment to remember and respect those same soldiers, patriots.

We are one nation, all of us in this together, with liberty and justice for all.
Each individual flag represents a man or woman who fought and died for these ideals and beliefs.

For this, we owe them eternal gratitude.
We owe them respect.
We owe it to them to remember their sacrifice,
to Pay Tribute to The Fallen.

Rich Politicians Get Richer After Winning

Are Rich Politicians Selfless Politicians? - The New York Times

There was an interesting article in today’s New York Times about rich politicians. Basically, “if a wealthy candidate wins, shares of his company often climb.”

Mara Faccio, an assistant professor of management at Vanderbilt University, looked at the cases of 109 capitalists and entrepreneurs who were elected to political office in 47 countries. She chose politicians in two categories: those who owned at least 10 percent of the shares of a publicly traded company (which many economists consider a controlling interest), and those who had been chief executive, president or vice president of such a company.

In a paper published in March in The American Economic Review, Ms. Faccio reported that the politicians’ companies experienced a 2.3 percent increase in their share prices, on average, around the time of their electoral victories. If a politician entered the executive branch of government, the effect was larger — up to a 12 percent lift for companies associated with new presidents, prime ministers and other top officials.

I know I’m getting a little ahead of myself but… Could a Pete Ricketts victory in November mean a huge payday for Pete and his father Joe?

Pete Ricketts Buys His Way to First?

Ricketts leads in poll released by campaign - Omaha World-Herald

As the Republican U.S. Senate primary race entered its final three weeks Wednesday, Pete Ricketts’ campaign released a poll that indicated he was leading his two rivals.

The Ricketts poll, conducted last week by the same polling company used by President Bush in 2004, indicated that Ricketts was ahead of former attorney general Don Stenberg, 43 percent to 33 percent, with David Kramer third at 7 percent.

If these numbers are correct, this comes as a surprise to a lot of people (including me). Maybe you can buy an election in Nebraska. But keep in mind where this poll came from. You should always be skeptical of “internal polling.” I conducted an internal poll last night of a likely GOP primary voter, and it revealed that I was leading Ricketts, Stenberg, and Kramer (I had 100% of the vote).

My favorite paragraph in the story…

Ricketts, a former Ameritrade executive, said in a statement that he was pleased the numbers showed “Nebraskans want a businessman and problem solver to represent them in the Senate.”

Someone needs to inform Pete that this is the primary election not the general.

In an unrelated story, Pete’s father, Joe Ricketts, just bought a $30 million penthouse in New York City.

One City. Three Districts. One Constitutional Mess

It seemed so simple. One issue, two sides, and crafty yard signs with which to decorate your yard. Oh, those simplistic days!

The great debate of the recently adjourned legislative session centered on the organization of the Omaha-area schools. Many supported the current districting plan. Others favored the ‘one city, one school district’ approach. As it turns out, that mattered little as Ernie Chambers favored neither.

chambers
The one, the only, the Ernie Chambers!

As a result, the initial proposal was twisted, turned, and downright beaten to a pulp until we somehow ended up with LB 1024.

A plan that didn’t really exist until the eleventh hour created three separate school districts inside a ‘learning zone’ that will encompass Douglas and Sarpy counties. Sounds like a great plan. Unless of course you oppose segregation. Many critics of the bill argue that the districts were divided along racial lines. After looking at the details, it’s a hard argument to beat. So why would the lone African-American in the Unicam support legislative segregation of the Omaha schools?

Chambers said that since the students in schools attended mostly by minorities are not receiving adequate funding, they will receive a better education if they had more control over their own school district.

Not everybody had such a bright outlook on the situation. As ABC News reported:

Omaha Sen. Pat Bourne decried the bill, saying, “We will go down in history as one of the first states in 20 years to set race relations back.”

Gwen Howard was also at odds with Chambers over the bill.

“History will not, and should not, judge us kindly,” said Sen. Gwen Howard of Omaha.

Putting the entire debate aside, I’d like to ask you all one question: If Chambers can get this Constitutional-defying bill passed in a legislature full of veterans, what is he going to be able to do in a legislature full of rookies? Next year we will have 20 new state senators. Lets all wish them the best of luck, and hopefully this batch will actually read that thing we call the Constitution.
