Republicans losing their Web identities - Lincoln Journal-Star
GOP candidate shut out of Web site - Omaha World-Herald
Many of you know that a story about me appeared in the Lincoln Journal Star this weekend. It wasn’t really about me but about something I did.
I want to commend Nate Jenkins of the Lincoln Journal-Star for writing a good article. I declined to comment in his article and the article by the Associated Press. Eventually, I will give some of my thoughts on the whole situation. Actually, I’m holding out for a call from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. I’m willing to grant them an exclusive interview on this subject.
So, why exactly did I make a post about this? Well, this is your opportunity to express your opinions on the matter.
UPDATE: Theatrical Performances In Politics Should Receive Awards - Nebraska State Paper
This is a very funny article by Ed Howard of the Nebraska State Paper. I think his point of view sums up this entire situation very well.
Drive to oust Hergert reaches UNL campus - Lincoln Journal-Star
The push to get rid of Regent David Hergert has reached the UNL campus. This push is being led by our good friend (and president of the UNL Young Democrats) Matt Schaefer.
We don’t have the power to remove him,” says Matt Schaefer, the student senator who authored the resolution calling for Hergert to quit.
“We do have the power to send a message that cheating and dishonesty and illegal activity by students and teachers isn’t tolerated, and it shouldn’t be tolerated when it is someone who helps run the university.
I have confidence that this resolution will pass with overwhelming support. Also, I hope a resolution similar to this one is introduced and passed by the UNO Student Government.
The Clubs and Organizations Fair was this afternoon at UNO. There was a great response to our booth, and we got to meet a lot of new people. I just hope those new people we met attend a meeting.

Last night, the College Democrats had the first meeting of the new semester.
We had over 60 people attend the meeting. I was very excited to see so many new faces, and I’m really excited about this upcoming year.
I will try and get some pictures uploaded as soon as possible. This post is open for discussion. Please discuss what you thought of the meeting, what you think the College Democrats should do this semester, etc.
Just a reminder, our next meeting is Monday, August 29th at 8pm in the Milo Bail Student Center. If you are interested in joining, it’s not too late. Click here to contact us, and we will send you additional information about the group.
I received this message from Jim Begley and wanted to pass it along to everyone. Since I’m a Catholic and a Democrat, I will be going to this meeting.
Greetings fellow Democrats!
As the fall semester begins, I would like to invite you to join a newly formed group called Catholic Democrats of Nebraska. The Catholic Democrats of Nebraska is a grassroots organization focused on strengthening the Democratic state party by reaffirming the strong correlation between the social justice teachings of the Catholic Church and the progressive ideals of the Democratic Party. Feel free to learn more about us at www.catholicdemocratsofnebraska.org
Please read the op-ed article included at the end of this e-mail, which was published in today’s Omaha World-Herald and written by Dan Schinzel, the president/founder of Catholic Democrats of Nebraska.
We invite you to attend our next meeting to discuss a variety of items that have developed since our last meeting in June. Please join us at the Brazenhead Irish Pub, 319 N. 78th St. on Wednesday, August 24 at 6PM. We are moving ahead and rapidly becoming a very visible entity in Nebraska politics.
Please forward this invitation to anyone you might know that would be interested in our important cause.
A tentative list of items to be discussed is as follows:
1. Preparations for September 28 “debut”
2. Mailing
3. W-H op-ed
4. PAC status
5. national organization
6. membership dues
7. Committee assignments
Please feel free to contact me with any questions. We look forward to seeing you on August 24!
Sincerely,
Jim Begley
Catholic Democrats of Nebraska
P.S. The op-ed article by Dan Schinzel can be read by clicking here.
The new school year is less than a week away. Unfortunately, that means classes will resume but that also means the College Democrats will be in full force.
For College Democrats, the last school year was incredible. In less than a year, we’ve grown to become the largest political group on campus. During the presidential election in ‘04 and the city election in ‘05, the College Democrats spent thousands of hours volunteering on political campaigns. Not only did we volunteer in Nebraska, but members of our group spent time volunteering in Missouri, South Dakota, and Iowa. We also sold more than a thousand political buttons on campus. We worked hard but we also had a lot of fun.
I have no doubt that we can continue this momentum and make College Democrats even better. With a little bit of work, this organization can become the largest (and best) student organization on campus.
During the first few days of school (August 22-24 from 10:30-1:00 pm), we will have a table in the Milo Bail Student Center. If you aren’t a member of College Democrats and would like additional information about our group, please stop by and say hello. We will also have a table at the Clubs and Organizations Fair (August 25th from 11-1 pm).
Our first meeting of the Fall Semester will be Monday, August 22nd at 8 pm in the Milo Bail Student Center (Gallery Room).
I hope to see all of you at our first meeting! If you have comments or suggestions about this upcoming year, please post them in the comments section.
Don Stenberg, David Kramer, and now Pete Ricketts. The former Ameritrade COO J. Peter Ricketts has announced he is running for US Senate in Nebraska.
At PeteRicketts.com, you can read Petey’s announcement.
I am not a career politician – I won’t vote like one and I will not act like one.
That’s bull shit!
I believe our nation must continue it’s absolute commitment to preserving the security, freedoms and safety of our nation and it’s people in the global fight against violent extremism and terrorism.
I think Pete got the memo. It’s no longer the war on terror. It’s the “global struggle against violent extremism.”
I believe we must preserve the sanctity of marriage as being between a man and a woman and ensure that our traditions of religious liberty and belief in God continues to be the guiding light of our great nation.
I have problems when I hear statements about God being “the guiding light” of our country. In the “global struggle against violent extremeism” we are up against other people that use God, Allah, and other high powers for their “guiding light.”
From theomahachannel.com
“What I bring to the table is a business background as a Nebraska leader who’s been growing a Nebraska business. I’ll focus on things like taxes and healthcare. We should have more business experience in Washington.”
I think we have an abundance of businessmen in Washington. I don’t think we need more. I think we need more teachers and farmers in the US Senate. We also have an abundance of millionaires in Washington and we don’t need a new one.
I have nothing against businessmen and I have nothing against millionaires but I don’t think J. Peter Ricketts brings anything special to the table. Actually, I’d like more small business owners in the US Senate, not more executives from publicly traded companies.
The Republican primary will be fun to watch. It will be interesting to see if they all run to the right and claim to be the “most conservative” person in the race. I have a feeling that won’t work.

An article about the law breaking University of Nebraska Regent David Hergert appeared in today’s Omaha World-Herald.
Hergert still says he won’t quit - Omaha World-Herald
A quote by Hergert in the story was very disturbing.
“I paid the penalties, and as far as I’m concerned, the issue is closed.”
No, Mr. Hergert the issue is not closed. Just because you “paid the penalties” doesn’t absolve you of your sins. I think Mr. Hergert is forgetting the fact that he broke the law. Hergert is also forgetting the fact that there is an ongoing criminal investigation. Maybe he’ll try and pay his way out of that mess too.
This clown is an embarrassment to himself, his constituents, and the university. It’s a shame that this man is held to a different standard than the students in the University of Nebraska system. When is the next Board of Regents meeting at UNO? I’m up for a good protest!
